SF in March

Brian has booked http://www.jdvhospitality.com/hotels/hotel/5 for our brief San Francisco trip in March. It looks like a pretty funky place and has gotten some good reviews via googling. Its a very reasonable rate too, considering the location.

We'll fly in on Wednesday (time tbd), have Thursday to play tourist, have Friday to play geek, and will fly back to Boston that night on a red eye so that we'll be in town for the Rob Zombie/Lacuna Coil show on 4/1. Talk about a whirlwind weekend!

Given that we only have 1 day, what do you think we should absolutely see with no question (assuming we won't have a car)? I'd love to see Alcatraz, but with only one day there I think we'll need to see it some other time (I'm guessing the tour would be a day thing or at the least would take up a good chunk of day).

We're particularly interested in any sites related to the birth of Bay Area Thrash (if these places still even exist). ;) I expected to find tons of thrash travel guides, given all of the other subcultural/niche travel sites I've seen but I was sadly mistaken.

Alcatraz is cool, and it's also a short trip. We took the boat over at 4pm and were back as the sun set, in time for dinner. It's just a boat ride, a short tour, and then you go...nothing else to do there. So, you might as well see it. it's the only thing I saw officially in San Fran. The rest of the time I visited with people or bummed around Chinatown and the Italian neighborhood (forgot its name).
