As for that not happening again, I was older when Gandalf came into my life and was there to see me through the trials of the past few years, much as you wouldn't be who you are without Max I wouldn't be here but for him.
It's not something you can plan, but as you said G-d works in mysterious ways. And it is those mysterious ways that give you gifts like the time you had with Max that make it worth living...I know you'll treasure the memories of Max and I can imagine no greater way to honor him.
