For all that this is pretty esoteric to me, I do look forward to a day when less is a choice. I think that's what makes the difference. When less is just what you get, you're like the White Queen, living in "a very fast country" where you have to run as fast as you can just to stay in one place. "Less with some wiggle room in case of emergency" strikes me as an appealing option - but not having been there, I can't say for sure. Maybe it really is such an individual thing that guessing is silly!
