Um,

I was laid off today. After working for the company for 5 years. I'm not sure how many the company as a whole let go but I was told that positions were cut all over the place. After meeting with my boss and her director, a recruiting consultant and an HR rep I saw the line of people in the waiting area of HR all waiting to get in behind me. Most had kleenexes.

I did pretty good, cleaned out all things accumulated over this long long time (I only forgot the lunch bag that I had left in the fridge). I talked with my friend Melanie for a while and she helped me bring stuff out to my car. Before that though my Manager came by to give me a hug, ask me to send me a copy of my resume to forward on to friends of hers and say she was sorry and felt awful that she had to do this.

****

I called B and told him the news and he turned around on the Mass Pike and headed home to keep me company. He was closer to Framingham so he got here first in time to take a call from Melanie - one of our old co-workers that left the company to go work for Blue Cross a while back I guess needs people and she wanted to give me the information. After talking a bit, B and I went to feed the ducks in Wellesley (like we always used to, like I did when I was a kid) only to find that they don't allow duck feeding there anymore.

So this afternoon I'll try and get my resume in order and do lots of searching. I was even given a list of openings at the company to see if I want to try and get back in - but I'm not sure about what I'll do. I was invited to some professional development/recruitment seminar which will be all day tomorrow and Thursday but I think I may skip it. I'm confident in my ability to write a good resume and sell myself. Its just been a REALLY long time since I've had to do that.

We'll be OK; with severance and vacation time I'll be paid until mid-January. I just really wasn't looking to do a job search right now.

On the bright side, I guess this means I'll have lots of time to work on stuff for school at least for the next couple of weeks :/

After 5 years....? That is awful! ((((HUGS))))
I hope something even better comes up...what kind of work are you looking for specifically? I'd be glad to keep my eyes and ears open...

"I hope something even better comes up...what kind of work are you looking for specifically? I'd be glad to keep my eyes and ears open..."

Basically I've been doing data analysis/financial reporting for an HMO (so getting a job like that would be an obvious possibility for me). Doing something like that in a human services/social services setting would be even better. I've even considered trying to be a research assistant - but that would most likely result in a huge cut in pay.

But if you see anything that looks like any of those (or remotely looks like any of those) I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!

I'm going to e-mail you, from my work account (mara@enc.edu), a list of contact names, numbers, and fax #'s of various HR Managers for some well-known corporations that I've heard through the grapevine are hiring.

*hug* I'm really sorry to hear that - good luck with the job hunt.

Oh my!

I'm sorry to hear you got laid off; that's almost never fun. But somewhere all the support and love you'll get from your boyfriend and the bunnies and your own turbo kick-ass skills and connections, I bet you'll do just fine. *hugs*

Please let me know if I can offer any more concrete help, like passing around a resume!

Hello :)

I tried e-mailing you to send you a resume (thanks for the offer to pass it around!) but the addresses I have aren't working . . . could you e-mail me at janderson@diabolis.net?

Thanks!

the other bright side is that you will have lots of time to work on stuff in your new house! because i'm sure you aren't completely done rearranging and organizing it all yet.

good luck with the job search. thankfully, you have a couple months to figure things out.

[identity profile] mizdarkgirl.livejournal.com 2002-10-15 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
I am so sorry to hear this. Maybe it will give you time in your new home? I have been thru this twice in the last couple of years and I know how hard & bewilderning it is. Let me know if I can help with an online search, I seem to do well at it. (The places I interviewed with during my last round were surprised on the amount of activity I could generate for myself jobwise. People have told me bostonworks.com is the place place right now that monter.com is posting less openings. Also try jobsniper advanced search and choose extra sites. http://www.jobsniper.com/php/search.php?c=0cc22a&adv=1®ioncode=0
Also stop by the book store and browse Boston Job Bank. I can lend you a copy if you would like.

*hugs* I'm so sorry to hear that...

I get a few non-profit job postings across my desk now and then, which I will gladly forward, if you're interested...

Yup,

Jodi,

I hope everything works out ok.
I know how it feels, and I know you did a good job for that company.
I guess this means no more intranet quotes of the day :-)

I know ATT Broadband is hiring, not sure how much, where or any details (I guess I am not much help) But I can find out if you are interested.

Lots of Hugs

Rich

I'm real sorry to hear that. Seemed like you were very dedicated to that job too, from what I could see. (I suppose after 5 years, you must be.)

Best of luck with the search.

Damn, I am so sorry. (((hugs))) that sucks monstrously.

This economy is starting to scare me. How many people do we know who have been laid off within the last year and had to scramble for a new job?

I am sorry to hear that Jodi. You are really bright though, I bet you will score a new job pronto.

*hugs* Like A, I just read this now - I have off tomorrow if you'd like to get together (if you decide to skip that all day thing). Hopefully this didnt happen to "coincidentally" come after finishing that great big project you'd all been working on for HEDIS. If nothing else, I hope you are able to remember how much fun you both looked like you had at your party, remember that there are lots of people that care about you both, and remember that you can rest for a bit (i'm sure Max wouldnt mind the company!). *hugs*

Right there with ya, sister.

This morning I woke up with no job/no school/no where to go to for the first time in, well, ever. It's a distinctly odd and subtle feeling. I think I'm doing ok with it. Hope you are too. Having bunches of support and help and hugs from friends helps, yes it does.

My company offers the use of a placement agency for us booted people, I suppose I should give them a call. I think I'm taking today off, though, and let the jobhunting commence tomorrow.

Hey! I just remembered I've still got an undrank Colt45 from your Hood party! I shall wrap it in a paper bag and drink it, sitting outside on the stoop. How apropo! The pic from the party came out great, may I link to them in my lj?

"My company offers the use of a placement agency for us booted people, I suppose I should give them a call. I think I'm taking today off, though, and let the jobhunting commence tomorrow."

Our company sponsored a 2 day workshop with some consultant. I went to the 1/2 day one today (had to skip the 2nd part for school) and will go tomorrow if I can get in my trip to the vet with the cat on another day. At least I was able to find out who else was let go and get some dirt on the situation (and learn that they'll probably have more cuts in January).

You're so gangsta! (and yes, feel free to link the pix) :)
