Wow,
Thursday I rocked out with Waltham (I already told you all that, I know you're probably getting sick of hearing about them but hey, its my LJ).
On Friday we went to the Swanstage Ball and then headed to the metal-themed hell. It was fun getting dressed up (though the hair didn't stay big with the rain); I felt proud to be one of the few true metal chicks in there (taking a goth, spiking up her hair and throwing on a small amount of clothing though it may be sexy, does not a metal chick make). It was neat hearing a wide variety of music from Aerosmith to Motley Crue to Skid Row to Megadeth to Black Sabbath. It was way too much fun :)
Yesterday I went with my Mom down to the cape for a wedding shower (it was a tea theme, very nice - and I won the contest for "best hat", thanks Lorelai) while my Dad and Brian (and later, Bad Andy) ripped apart the kitchen. We now have no stove - here starts the camping like adventure of cooking everything in a grill in our backyard or in the microwave and toaster oven :)
We found 2 things:
The house is most likely older than we were told, and than is on the assessor's "card". We had thought it was build in 1917 though thought this odd, since the house across the street is a similar design to ours (same room set up, same window placement, same gables - our house is a bit bigger though) and that one was built in 1880. SHIT! The guys found newspapers in the wall from January of 1893! Now I guess someone could have had almost 40 year old newspapers laying around that they decided to stuff in the wall for insulation, but that would have been very odd. They took down the sheets and they are now in my craft room . . . we need to find a way to preserve them and Brian wants to frame portions of them.
Also, there was a staircase inside of our kitchen wall (in the corner to the left of the stove) that looks like it was meant to meet up with the landing on our stairs going to the 2nd floor (where the stained glass window and linen closet is. My Dad is thinking that the builder at first thought it may have been a good idea to have a way to get from the kitchen to the 2nd floor without coming into the main entryway (the steps would have gone into what is now the back of our linen closet). It looks like they were never finished though, perhaps they decided against it to allow more room in the kitchen.
The room looks huge now that there are no cabinets in it!
So, thus the adventure begins. Brian took a bunch of pictures so once they are up we can post them. The newspaper thing is so neat, I was wondering if we'd find treasures in the walls - it was the only room we hadn't ripped apart so if anything cool was to be hiding it would be in there (though we haven't ripped out floors, who knows if there is anything neat hiding in them).
I can't wait to have a nice, normal kitchen. B and I will do naughty things on the counters or something once its done ;) hee hee!
Today I'm going to try and mow the lawn, I have a 2 hour dance practice and then are heading over to my parent's house for Dad's day. I got him 2 tix (one for him, one for Mom) for the Aerosmith/Kiss show which occurs on the day of his 50th birthday. So Brian and I will be rockin out with my parents at Great Woods :)

this is actually really common in turn-of-the-century victorians-- it's a maid's staircase, precisely so the servants could move through the house without being seen by guests.
My parents' house has one too: the staircase itself is now their pantry, and the top is also a linen closet.
what cool finds!

One way that a lot of people do it is by using a spray that seals the paper up. You might want to contact the Northeast Document Conservation Center (its right up the street from me and they are really nice people)

Thanks!
Thanks for the info!
Its pretty brittle, I'm suprised that they were able to get the few solid sheets down that they did (most are in sections). Still I guess its worth looking into how to keep it from getting worse :)

woa, i thought dad was turning 51?
He is 50 already... isn't he? he was born in 1952. so that's 51 this August?... or no?
Forgive me if i'm mistaken, i was educated in waltham.
ps-
jaime & i are extremely jealous
Birthdays
I'm just going by my birthday - I know he was around 22 when they had me, I'm almost 28, so 22 + 28 is 50.
I'm too sleepy to do the math right now but I think you're right - if he was 1 in 1953 I guess in 2003 that would make him 51, I think.
zzzzzzz . . .
