Horny!
Brian spent some more time working on my bantha horns last night (we're working on a 'sexy bantha girl' outfit for me to wear so that I can lead him around in his Tuscan Raider getup). I cut out the pieces for the outfit on Monday, sewed them last night, and should be able to do the finishing touches (trim and try the thing on) tonight. This should be interesting :)
I was hoping to go to either Bottle Rocket last night or Man Ray tonight but I can feel the start of a cold coming on. Since I'd rather be healthy than sick for a month I'm going to pass on it so that I can drink tea, keep warm, and get to bed at a reasonable hour. Dammit, I'll make it there before I go back to school though! We'll be at Ceremony next Monday.
Arisia, who is going? What is happening there?
We're going to give it a chance and all, but usually I'd like to know what I'm getting for my $50 per person (not even a formal schedule, just a list of the kinds of things that will happen would be nice).
I know friends work really hard on this con but what happens there seems to be some mythical, guarded secret - all people can tell me is that "its a lot of fun". That's usually after they've asked us to volunteer. I'd like to actually experience the thing first before giving my time to it, you know?
Right now all that's advertised is a list of guests (most I haven't heard of) and The Dresden Dolls. I know at some point there will be a masquerade, perhaps a drum circle, presumably vendors and an art room. Presumably panels: but I don't want to spend the whole day sitting in a corner of the hotel waiting for the evening events if all panels have to do with Sci Fi Literature, Polyamory and Filking :).
We won't be staying at the hotel so we need to figure out how we're going to pull off the costume change thing (and knowing what's happening when is kind of important for figuring out what we're wearing when). There's no sense in being a bantha chick if I'm going to get bored after 20 minutes (if I'm unable to find an interesting panel or activity during the day) and want to go walking down Boylston Street (I'd be much more comfy doing that in my jeans).
I'm not expecting DragonCon or anything, I'm just kind of nervous about what we'll end up finding (paying $50 to hang out with friends in a hotel. well, normally I wouldn't do that kind of thing). I've definitely been spoiled :)

(Anonymous) 2004-01-07 06:29 am (UTC)(link)On the Other Devil, Yes, $50 is a lot, but that could be useful if you're at all interested in what the con offers. Movies, Art, Masquerade, Late Night Drumming, Late Night Dancing. There's a small dealer's room which requires a membership. Dealer's Row is run out of individual's rooms and generally does not.
Namaste.
Arisia
Right, but how will I know what the daytime stuff is, and if it will bore me or not if there's no list of what's going to happen? ;) I know that setting a schedule is tough but a general 'on Saturday this will happen', 'on Sunday this will happen' would be helpful.

I paid $50 and travelled to go to DragonCon, I think the amount is reasonable if there is stuff going on that I liked. The DC schedule wasn't set until a couple of weeks before the event, but there were lists of what was going to happen (tracks, panels, etc) so I knew that there would be lots to do. "Movies", what kind of movies? "Art", what kind of art? "Masquerade", when? I'd love to see this but don't want to spend the whole weekend there if the masquerade is the only thing I'm interested in. I knew that if I went to DC there was to be anime playing 24x7, that there was a British comedy track, a Star Wars Track, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer Track . . . all I know about Arisia is that there is some artist, some filker, some author and some band (that's not really enough to fill up a weekend, though).
My only point is, I'm going because I have friends involved and I've heard of them having a good time in the past so I'm giving it a chance. What's to motivate someone that doesn't know a thing about the con to spend $50 based on the little information on the web site?
Re: Arisia
They also show sci-fi movies
panels, anything from swordfighting sca stuff to poly to art, how to make costumes, write stories etc.
Masquarde, happens later usually on Saturday.
Art room... prof and non prof art, with art auction.
dealers room/row

Actually this also requires membership they are just more lax about checking for them...

I'm sure it is, but why do I want to pay $50 to then shop if that's the extent of the daytime activities? :)
I know that can't be it, the expected 2000 people wouldn't go if that's all there was . . . I'd just like to know what else there will be too :)
We did pay $10 for a "con" in Framingham recently that was just a huge dealer's room with some celebs signing autographs and doing talks at a microphone - they advertised what it was though, we weren't expecting much else, and we were satisfied. I'd be pissed if I paid $50 and all I got was a sci-fi flea market :)
Re: Arisia
There's also a large (they sold out all the space) art show.
Re: Arisia
I would have loved that, damn. I missed the Robot Wars that they had at DC because it was on Monday (and we flew out early that morning).
"There's also a large (they sold out all the space) art show."
I tend to think of the dealer's room and art show (or artist's room) as a given at a con - what I usually want to know is what *other* stuff there is too :)
Re: Arisia
like jodi said, that's a problem. there is no schedule.
Re: Arisia
Guess I'll scratch arisia off of my list! lol...don't have a burning desire to go or the money to get in and still buy things

I seem to remember they also had movie rooms, showing all anime, or all of some other genre.

Going early in the day would be fine if I knew there would be shopping *and* other stuff (like interesting panels). I want to try avoid being there and being bored out of my mind if all there is to interest me during the day is shopping :)
"I seem to remember they also had movie rooms, showing all anime, or all of some other genre."
These are things that all sound very nice - things that should be listed on a website. :)
I'm not really complaining I'm just very, very confused. If they want people to go to the con, shouldn't they advertise beyond "here's a con, its at this hotel, here's 5 people that will be here" and "there's great stuff, art, literature, movies, dancing"? I'd hope that a little more than one week before they con there would be some kind of general theme for events that are happening that they'd be able to share on the website.
I think I'm just to anal and organized for my own good sometimes - it gets me frustrated. I also feel bad for friends that are running around like chickens with their heads cut off right now in the planning :)

It's not just you we're very short staffed this year.... The person running the web is also filling in to run another dept.
Re: Arisia
I know, this all sucks and I feel really bad for you guys.
Next year (after grad school) I'd actually have time to volunteer - once I can see what the con is like and if I enjoy it (which I'm guessing I would) I'd love to volunteer. I've wanted to help Tiggerette with things this month since I'm not in school but I haven't been able to figure out from her what she needs help with (she mentioned helping out *during* the con, but I'd really like to just go once to see what its like, first).
Now, could YOU all handle my organized, anal behavior next year? :)

I'd save the fun outfits for night time.

The list of Programming items was supposed to have been posted. Hopefully soon, but as soon as I get it I'll let everyone know.
Arisia
Thanks :) This wasn't there the last time I looked.
I'm just curious, how long have these ideas been out there? Like, I understand how coordinating people/space can be hard . . . but I'm guessing you guys knew for a while that the Higgins Folks would be doing classes of some sort or that Eric Raymond would be doing some kind of talk, or that RHPS would be happening. It may be good to list these general things on the site in the future to try and get people in (that haven't gone before, and don't know anyone involved to tell them what's going to happen).
Heh, and I thought that the poly panel wasn't happening this year ;)
"The list of Programming items was supposed to have been posted. Hopefully soon, but as soon as I get it I'll let everyone know."
You may want to post to the Arisia LJ community too, and let people know that the main events are posted. There's been only note of one panel and some gaming stuff on there (just another way to pass the word on and hopefully pull in more attendees).
I commend you and your team on all the work you do - I know it takes a lot of time and is stressful. I just feel bad that people I'd have assumed to know about Arisia (like, 501st members) hadn't heard of the con before (and pointing them to the website before today didn't provide any motivation for them to go).
Re: Arisia
Basically the whole web site needs a MAJOR overhaul.... a lot of the info is there just not linked correctly or easy to find.
Heh, and I thought that the poly panel wasn't happening this year ;)
Heh, we've been fighting an uphill battle on a ton of DIS-information thats been put out there this year... (Off line I'll let you know my true feelings on some of this).

I'm curious about this as well... between the two mailing lists that talk about it; there's been a lot said.... as it were.
and J; when Skaven and I have gone in the past (I'm every year but one since 97, I think) we rarely shop there - we specifically go to see friends, as there's a lot of out of towners we dont see otherwise. that's why we go primarily at night; not too long, but long enough. then, on with the parties! Not that it helps you much, but late-mid afternoon was a good time for us; S would be in a larp and I could do drum circle/panels/etc.
I do hope you enjoy yourselves!

it sounds like arisia is either (a) a bunch of fuckwits this year, or (b) are already operating near capacity, and so function on repeat business, not trying to get new business. repeats will come regardless.
...anyway, i stopped going to arisia years ago because i stopped being interested in getting drunk and partying. i hear they have panels though ;-)

Arisia hasn't been much fun the past two years, but for the Masquerade, the first year I went was great. Too much poly and fetish focus for me in the panels, but the roaming can be fun, what you make it.
