Costuming, Travel

Brian has been working on a Female Tusken Raider costume for me http://www.tk7602.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=119&pos=376 . Since we saw it at the MOS, and given that Brian's got an old sandy costume himself, we both thought it would only be natural for me to have one too. He bought a mask kit from someone and the thing's all painted, and he's been working on weathering it. We'll be working to get the fabric bits together over the next few weeks, and Ashton is making the purse. Luckily, we have leftovers in the attic from Brian's costume that should serve for part of the female stuff, so it shouldn't cost too much $ to complete.

The goal is to bring both Tusken costumes to Disney for our trip http://www.starwars.com/community/event/disney/news20060411.html over Memorial Day weekend. Given their size, it will be easy enough to pack them with our regular clothes for the weekend - and this means that we can walk in the parade with the FL Garrison folks http://www.fl501st.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=54. This also means we'll get some free passes to the park(s), and will potentially be able to see the 'underground city' that park employees move around in, unbeknownst to patrons. We learned we'll most likely be sharing our hotel room with another NEG couple (Tiamatlady, the one that you know from the South Shore). They were planning on going anyway and we'll have the space, so it will be nice splitting the room cost and having very experienced Disney guides along on the trip. We've been told that the 501st and Rebel Legion are the only costumed people that aren't Disney employees that have been welcome to do these kinds of things.

Whoot! Between this, the pink Eevee dress, Sheltay Retrac and a retro/casual dress I've been meaning to make I have a lot of sewing ahead of me. I also need to get a red wig for my Mara costume, and pick up a colored blade for my saber (I'd prefer purple, but there have been discussions about how she should really be seen with red when she's a baddie).

I need to stop working on my house and trooping if I'm going to get any of it done by Dragoncon! :)

One of these days I'd like to go to SW weekends... Are you rooming with L and S? I know she was thinking of going as of Saturday. I can't wait to see your Tusken, and the AT-AT driver! I've never seen Mara either, come to think of it. Was Mara's Hand lightsaber pink? I always thought that color was too girly for her, but that's the color it looks in the comics. You know, [livejournal.com profile] celiskywalker would probably let you borrow her Mara saber, if you want to be really accurate for a specific event.

I know the feeling! I need to dig my teeth into my costumes if I'm going to get any of them done by Dragon*Con. The goal is 4 (x-wing, RotJ Luke, Raven, and Slade), when my track record for past years is 3 out of 6! There really shouldn't be any reason why I can't get mine done, but I've barely even started to look into putting [livejournal.com profile] sajuka's together yet. I'm still a rather novice seamstress though, so sewing tasks always feel really daunting to me at the beginning. Once it's done though, I look at it and think, "Gee, that wasn't so bad - what was I afraid of?"

"Are you rooming with L and S? I know she was thinking of going as of Saturday."

We are hoping too (she's still working out details). We had reserved a room with 2 beds because Sean was going to be going with us (Sandweasel and his Fiance were going to be in the same hotel in another room) but the three of them ended up not able to go.

"Was Mara's Hand lightsaber pink? I always thought that color was too girly for her, but that's the color it looks in the comics. You know, celiskywalker would probably let you borrow her Mara saber, if you want to be really accurate for a specific event."

I think she's been shown with the pink/purple one, and red in different books, and with luke's blue saber at the turning point from bad to good. Celiaskywalker has a REALLY good and accurate pink/purple one, but its so rare and expensive I'd feel really uncomfortable borrowing it. :) Nothing's set in stone about official colors and all that, but it seems like the sentiment from costume standard discussions is that if Mara = Bad, she should have a red saber. This does go against some of the books, but given that she's EU its kind of fuzzy about what to use as a standard, so I guess I can see where they may be coming from. We have a random lighttech saber that's lukeish, so I'll get a blade that fits into that at some point, in some color tbd :)

I'm sort of here too. I can follow a pattern, but through customizing at me and I panic (usually the end result is fine, but I freak out in the process). Having the dress form now should make this much easier though. My retro/casual dress will be the test. I have a pattern for a 40's hula/burlesque style dress, but rather than using hawaiian shirt fabric I'm going to use an old star wars sheet someone gave me (I can join Lori and the toga sheet guy at dragoncon!). I figured it would be a good use of the sheet, something different to wear at cons, but still comfy/covering at the same time.

Geek? *looks around* Who, me? :-)

I always refrain from borrowing nice/expensive/fragile things too, because I'm a klutz and something awful would happen to it. I also doubt she'd ever actually let that one out of her sight. :-) It shouldn't be too difficult to get a blade to fit the saber you already have. I want to get a custom built saber for myself at some point - I've always drooled over them. I'm still uncertain what to do for a Luke ROTJ saber. The narrow hilt makes customs with removable blades hard to do, none of the custom shops will machine me a look-alike, and the one look-alike out there that is close, sort of, is really expensive. Like, I could get Scout armor from Greg for cheaper.

The retro dress sounds like fun! Lori needs a new twin - I think she's gotten tired of me being her Dragon*Con shadow for so many years. *g* You can always practice on scrap fabric before you cut out your sheet, if you feel like it. You said your new Leia dress came out really well, didn't you? It'll be cool to see that at the MOS in a few weeks.

I know what you mean about the customizing. I wouldn't have been able to do the Officer's tunic without Lori at the least helping customize the patterns. I've had basic sewing lessons, but have never taken any classes on custom fit, or pattern alterations. I think a dressform really would help, though I haven't gotten one yet. I haven't found anyone reliable to give me a good rec yet, so I missed out on the sale at JoAnn's. I'll have to remember to bug Brian next time I see him. :-)

Once I play with mine I can let you know how it works out. We should also do a geeky crafty day sometime, god knows that we've all got 100 things to work on :)

You know, Larissa keeps saying the same thing... :-) She wants to do RotJ Leia, and never finds the time to work on it.

I'd love to do a Mara or Leia, but I'm not sure I could pull it off. The construction, I mean.

That will be good for you guys - I think they're on the same page as you, grown-up behaviour wise. Are they bringing W? That ALSO might be good for Das Trooper-Daddy. *evil grin*

On an aside - are we on for Sunday? I REALLY need a nice calm day. We can skip manicures and just go out to the Outlet. I know you're trying to get yours done before Friday and I broke most of my nails last weekend while moving things, so it's not really worth it right now *pouts* Maybe we can try again in two weeks or so.

You make me tired just watching how much stuff you guys do!

We had a lot of fun hanging out with them at DC, so I'm sure Florida will be fun. We seem similar in terms of wanting to go out and have fun, but not doing the crazy drunk or drama thing.

They are not bringing Walker, this is just the two of them. After the MOS exhibit, they really need the break! :)

Heh, no comment! :)

"On an aside - are we on for Sunday? I REALLY need a nice calm day. We can skip manicures and just go out to the Outlet."

That sounds good to me! I'm kind of broke, so I'm doing my own nails for Friday, and I'll be mostly window shopping Sunday (but getting out to do just that will be nice). What time do you think we should go (and from where)? I know its right off of 495 near the 95 junction (I drove past it Monday night), so I'm not sure what makes the most sense in terms of going.

"You make me tired just watching how much stuff you guys do!"

Its not really that crazy, I think we just save up talking about things until there are a bunch of them (but its not like we're doing them all at the same time). We're DINKS, so we have the luxury of stuff like that :)

Hrm.

We can either meet up halfway, or I have no problem coming up to you, and picking you up. I had a look at stores and I am FORBIDDING myself from buying anything but a new piece of luggage, or a new pair of black sneaks if I find them in leather. I think I'm better off window shopping too.

I was thinking about noonish, maybe we can have a midafternoon ice cream break afterwards, rather than doing lunch and all that. I'm planning on a lot of purging on Saturday, stuffwise, so I am aiming to be plesantly tired.

Let me know if that works for you?

Sunday

Noon works for me. I think meeting up somewhere in the middle may just complicate it, so I can drive out to your place (give you more time for purging stuff) :)

I can just park in Friendly's and give you a call when I get there - what do you think?

If that's OK with you - and I'll drive from there, so you're only doing the one way. We can have a sundae at Friendly's later! (See how I'm all about the ice cream?)

If by purge you mean sleep - I'm purging Saturday and I'm HOPING to be well done, except for the stuff that just needs either selling or giving away. I'd invite you to rummage my boxes, but you are purging yourself, and that DOES sound naughty. *evil grin* I will probably be bringing a suitcase to Goffee some evening, for pillaging by the "goths" at large.

Yay for shopping, even if it's only window! I will see you then, barring anything coming up.

I hope this isn't too dumb a question, but is there a difference between what female and male Tusken Raiders wear? They always looked pretty much the same to me. :)

Tuskens

[identity profile] dancer.livejournal.com 2006-04-19 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The male and female costumes are completely different (there's even a baby costume). Here's a Tusken family:

Wow, I can see that now. Thanks for the clarification.

You guys are coming down for SWW? Cool! I hope I can march the same weekend as you. I'm already scheduled for the last three weekends.

I don't think you'll get to see the underground city (with being part of the parade, anyway). We all meet at a gate outside of MGM Studios and are corralled into a small hangar-like building to change into our costumes.
