The grapevine

I'm seeing more and more how much easier (or more difficult) things go when you have some kind of connections. Our broker can do a lot more in Waltham where he knows all of the other brokers well and knows how they work. We're having issues with BOTH of the listing brokers that he's been in contact with in Framingham.

We still weren't able to get into Framingham house #2 today - he's assured us that the selling broker has assured him that we can get in some time tomorrow. We went back to Framingham house #1 to check out the attic and go back for a closer look at the fire damage in the basement. My Dad has said that there are just too many odd things down there in the way that it was fixed and he's not expecting that our broker will find papers/permits of the repairs at City Hall (if that's the case we're done thinking of that house - don't want any structural issues due to a fire 15 years ago).

If time permits we'll be hitting some open houses around Malden and Medford today (we're interested in Melrose but there weren't any open houses in our price range). We have to take care of fixing my car up in the driveway a bit (short story - I parked at Burger King and when I went to back out of the spot my bumper was hooked over a bolt which pulled the whole damned thing off)! Its a good thing Saturns are so easy . . . one trip to Home Depot and $.21 on a couple of washers and the thing just pops back into place :)

Its been such an odd weekend!

That is the good thing
the bad thing - one LITTLE bang up and you have to replace the ENTIRE piece thanks to crumple zones.
My one major problem (Not my fault thanks the the old guy making a left who stopped dead in the the middle of the road)really only damaged the front passenger side, in the front corner, but thatnks to crumpling, and plastic, I replaced the front bumper, the light, the whole side panel and the hood. Had I had an old piece of crap, I could have just banged out the dent and replaced the light.

*shrug*

I've never done what you did tho, but I have these flaps on mine, and I think mine is a bit higher off the ground. You're lucky you didn't strip the bolts. And you have family that can fix it, I'd have to take mine straight to the dealer.
Which reminds me - I need the big 60,000 mile tune up. *bleh*

the good thing - this is exactly the sort of design practice that keeps a LARGE bang up from shoving the steering column through your chest, your head from splattering across the dashboard, the hood from decapitating you, and the floor from crushing your legs.

having totaled a car which gave its life to keep my girlfriend and i alive -- the tradeoff is worth it. more than worth it. my life is worth more than my car's indestructability, because indestructable cars usually achieved that at the cost of the destruction of their drivers. i love my granddaddy's 1969 Pontiac Starchief, but i would never want to be inside of it during an accident. i'd rather be in a motorcycle accident than an accident inside an "American Steel"-era car.

Considering the "bang up" didn't even set off my airbags, I'm thinking over $2,000 MIGHT have been a bit excessive.
Were it considerably FASTER and HARDER (no pun intended) then yes, I would thank my Guardian that I have crumple zones.
_I_ almost didn't have an accident at all, I manageed to slow to under 10 MPH.

i just realized -- it sounds like (i think) you didn't even get into the crumple zones (or the car would have been totaled, as the parts that crumple to absorb energy are in the frame). you just lost plastic and hood. suck. :-(

That would be it.
Big pieces of plastic, which is what the dealer called "crumple zones"
The "steel safety cage" isn't supposed to crumple.
Or so they say.
What it means is that one little bang breaks things and forces replacement of a whole piece.
I keep thinking "I should get a bike" then I read stories like yours from earlier. *shudder*
Mostly because I don't suck, but also because I know cool people who ride, I give cycles a wide berth, and much road respect. _I_ don't want to be the one who hits a bike, thanks.

the salesperson in question is an idiot. the frame (aka "steel safety cage" in Saturnese) crumples to absorb kinetic energy. the body work is just destroyed. that the body work happens to be alongside the crumple zones is just the way it goes.

Saturn salespeople, in my experience, are no less stupid than any other dealer . . . they just exert less pressure on you at sales time, and generally most seem to mean well.

Hi, you don't know me, but I just found out about LiveJournal recently and really want to join it- Problem is, I don't know anyone who has a journal so that I can get one of those code things. I feel really stupid asking a total stranger, but by any chance do you have a code that you're not going to use? If you do, could you please e-mail me at Modern MiIIie@aol.com? I would totally appreciate it! And if not, I'm sorry for bothering you.
