More car fun

So tonight B and I are going car shopping. My check engine light went on this morning and I stopped by the mechanic's (i.e. the good guy I normally bring my car to) to see if they could take a look at it today.

I told him what they fixed at the Ford Dealer last week and he said "that part has NOTHING to do with the antifreeze". They are swamped today so tomorrow I'll be leaving the car for them to shut off the check engine light (and make sure the car is still safe to drive).

I'd like a Subaru Forester though I don't know much about them and wasn't planning on spending that much $ (actually, I wasn't planning on spending any $ on a new car, grrrr). Dodge Stratus is another option and of course there is good ole reliable (and cheap) Saturn.

We shall see. I guess its good that B is selling his stock options this week (the little bit that he has). And now I'm off to check Edmunds.com (great, great car site).

My husband loves thinking about cars--he's been planning our *next* car purchase since the second we signed the agreement on our first one, four years ago!

Are you getting a new one? What are your requirements? If you are interested, he could provide his insights...he reads every review, blah blah blah...

I personally dont care much about cars. I want our next car (any car) to be reliable and cheap. Surprise, surprise-- the only new car he could talk me into four years ago was a honda civic hatchback :)

Its a favorite, favorite subject. The car du jour is a Nissan Altima 2002.

Our civic is silver :)

And we are shopping for a new car stereo, too. Our puppy ate ours.

I own one and have never had any major problems with it after 7 years and 130k+ miles and still counting.

I'm with him. We had a green 1993 Civic coupe, were terrible about maintenance, and it gave us no problems at all. If you don't count the getting stolen and stripped part.

Now we have a 1994 black Civic Si hatchback with 100,000 miles on it and it's in impeccable condition and has needed no major repairs.

Hondas are safe, reliable and hold their value (you won't end up owing as much as the car is worth four years from now). They're not as big as the Forrester, but considering what B drives, do you really need another big car?

I'm driving a Dodge Stratus as a rental car. It feels a bit big to me, but it's very comfortable.

Heh,

Well after the accident my sister had in their last car. My brother-in-law just got himself his mid-life-crisis car. A Chevy Caprice Convertable. That thing even looks fast just sitting in the driveway.

Oh well, I need more $ to put down before I can start thinking of any thing new-ish. When last I looked I'd get a whopping $300 for the PoS that I'm driving now. :-/ Oh well The dream would be for a gas guzzling Explorer or Mountineer. (ok i'd like it better if it was a fuel efficeint Explorer or Mountineer, but I can only suspend my disbelief so far) :-)

Well, my feelings on honda are well known -- MY 1990 Honda Prelude has some 142 K miles on it and it's running quite nicely imho.

Tiggerette wound up with an accord at a pretty good price -- and a bigger engine than mine, but it doesn't 'feel' as fast. She was looking at the Subarus as well -- not sure why she stopped looking at them as much.

I dunno that I am gonna buy another honda next time myself -- I'm just not excited enough by them, although the most recent crop of preludes is tempting.

My brother just got a 96 nissan maxima, and it seems really great as well.

If only I could justify a camero....

Ah, the check engine light. The world's most useless indicator. Mt wife refers to it as the Red Alert, after those science fiction movies where you see "RED ALERT" flashing on screens withhout telling you what the problem is and how to fix it.

Personally I was dying for either a Subaru Outback or a Forrester but couldn't find a decent enough used one (plan on dropping 20k + for a decently outfitted one) I learned to drive on a 86 GL wagon with 4wd and loved it to death.

We had to retire the subaru (Poor Bucky-- named for Buckaroo Bonzai because they are both half-Japanese, half-American :) ) and I inheirated a toyota corolla... not a bad car but it didn't have any really strong good karma... but if you're stuck for something reasonable its not bad...

It was totaled on halloween-- and now I've got a saturn. Whatever you do, get the traction control. I wish mine had it but I got a used one and trying to find a used saturn with traction control in the south is impossible. Overall I'm happy with it and they have a new SUV type of Forrester-type coming out you may want to look into.

Currently driving: 97 Saturn SL2 with the alloy wheels :) Silver with gray interior.

Dream car: 2000 LL Bean Limited Edition Subaru Outback :) They're only 30k :)

Do NOT take my engine problems as any kind of CAR problem, not putting oil in for over 10,000 will do it to any car (long story, not precisely my fault, I still say I had a leak.)
I love love LOVE my car. Nice size, lots of power, and I abuse it like it's a slave.
It so is my little bitch, leather and all. *grin*
Do test drive whatever you like, and don't let price make ALL the decision for you, you need to be happy and content, and you're already settling since you're not getting your "dream" car.
And your big hair.
*runs and hides*
