Stuff

Its been a nice weekend. Friday dinner and hanging with Friends. We picked up the Apples to Apples game finally - we need to get a group together to play soon.

Yesterday we made our way out to Mahoney's in Wayland and bought planing mix and some mulch. They were so helpful, and when I told one woman this was our first foray into planting things outside she said "Oh, well God bless you!" all excitedly. There were so many pretty plants that I can see how one could get addicted to this kind of thing. The rose bush is now planted, and we weeded and mulched our front yard. We ran short on mulch but that's OK, since there's one large spot with no plant that we want to get something for. In the process we met Jay, our regular mailman. The older I get the more and more I get like my dad, easily talking to strangers that pass by.

After cleaning up, Brian finally took pictures of the house (including pics of the new rose bush and mulched yard):

We then headed to my parent's house for the nephew's birthday party. Look! A Storm Trooper and Tie Fighter pilot showed up:

We suck and didn't make it to Curses, again. One of these days I'll get my ass out there. I do want to try and make it to Bottlerocket on Tuesday though, to hear Lady B's last spinning.

Have a great day all! I'm being taken to High Tea for a late birthday present :)

hmm, don't know why I didn't mention this before. I suggest everyone plant ROSE OF SHARON bushes. They can stay as bushes, or grow into trees, depending on how you prune 'em. They come colors of flowers -- white, peachypink, lavender pale pink, lavender pale blue. The colored ones have darker aerolas in the middle, and large, trumpet like flowers. Unfortunately they don't have scent, but they keep on keeping on with the PRODIGOUS flowers from mid-July to frost. They don't flower the first year as they get rooted, but after that, it's a joy. Best flowr bang for my buck. And they grow pretty fast too.

The house looks like it was recently redone on the interior, and it must feel good to be settled. Don't know if it is because of the tricky weather here, but I have had a hard time getting live christmas trees to transition from a winter in the house to a summer planting, although my house mates seem to have the flow beds just where they want them for plummage.

Neat that you guys were able to make your nephews birthday party a memorable one. Is there anyone doing this professionally for appearances? A couple of friends in New Orleans made their way through college and bought starter homes from the money they made doing singing telegram/clown performances for parties and special occasions.

>but I have had a hard time getting live christmas trees to transition from a winter in the house

No wonder--they are not supposed to spend more than a few days in the house! (Unless they are Tropical plants like Norfolk Island Pines.) If it's an outdoor conifer like a fir, it has to be kept cold-but-not-deeply-freezing: like 30-45 degrees. In Oregon, where I'm from, we'd keep them on the porch for the winter, but it's probably too cold here. Ask Mahoney's or someplace what to do.

The little trees do well inside, it's when I transplant them into the ground in the summer that they turn brown and die. I would have thought that those canadian fir trees would be a little more hardy than that.

[identity profile] mixedborder.livejournal.com 2004-08-02 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
They have adapted to life inside. They can't then re-adapt to the stresses of sun, wind, and varying temperature.

Interesting - I thought that they would do better outside, at least in a temporate period of the spring.

There is also a risk of going from potted to planted, but have held off on getting any other trees until I have a better plan of action, though my palm tree that I have inside has been doing well for the last 3 yrs now.

"The house looks like it was recently redone on the interior"

We painted almost all of the rooms when we moved in, hence the recently re-done thing. The previous owners had also put a lot of work in too.

Well, the guys have these costumes since they are 501st Legion members, but that group doesn't really get paid (being a non-profit organization, they mostly do fund raising events). The group doesn't do birthday parties as a rule, but this wasn't a 501st event, just a hubby and a friend volunteering on their own time to do it to amuse our nephew :)

Congratulations on your outdoor-gardening debut!! The house & yard look wonderful.

Re your LOTR costumes: I saw the exhibit Saturday, and alas, the only Aragorn costume they have is his "travelling" one that he wears for most of the trilogy. For Arwen, they have her riding costume and the blue gown with the very low scoop neck.

But the costumes are fabulous to see close up!! They have Galadriel's, and Theoden's armor (and the costume under it), and Sauron and a Ringwraith and Frodo and the dead-Boromir-in-the-boat (creepily realistic!) and many many more...and the armor & props and rings and so on are absolutely amazing close up... there's even fancy black embroidery on the Ringwraith's sleeves, can you believe it?? The details are absolutely mindblowing.

Wow, thanks for the LOTR review! Brian is bummed they won't have that Aragorn there, but we have the DVD for reference at least (the surcoat is decidedly black, we were wondering, since its blue in all the toys but stated as black in some reference materials).

Embroidery on the ringwraiths? Wow!

Yes. The books I have--the Visual Guide and the Photo Guide--confirm that. The latter book as an excellent closeup showing the detail from the waist up--would you like to borrow it?

We have the "Weapons and Warfare" book that's got pretty good photos of each layer of that outfit. I think we'll be OK with that, but I'll ask Brian if he wants to look at the photo guide too and let you know.

Thanks! I'm starting to do the muslin ones this week (for the red velvet and the black pleather) and hopefully we'll pick up the real stuff for it this coming weekend :) Brian will have the fun of painting on the tree of gondor onto the outer tunic :)

The closeup shows that the tree is embroidered, actually (in silver thread, satin-stitch)...but painting is certainly easier!

yeah, if i was doing the surcoat in leather i'd have it embroidered (as i don't know how myself), but since i'm using pleather, i'm not bothering with that much work :)
