I want to ride my bicycle,

I want to ride my bike! Damn songs getting stuck in my head! :)

In all seriousness though, I'm pondering if I want to do a charity bike ride in May for brain tumor research. A couple of 501st members went last year to cheer on the returning riders, and it seems like there is larger interest in the group this year (it will be easier, because it won't be post the ROTS madness).

They have a short 10 mile ride route, and I'm thinking I may want to do it in partial armor (or at least, exercise clothes of a Star Wars bent, a costumeish outfit). I'm a pretty active person but haven't been biking in YEARS! I have a good, tuned up bicycle in my garage that I just need to get out riding. So for my biker friends, do you think given some training it will be a breeze for a relatively already healthy/active person? 10 miles biking doesn't seem like *that* much. I think it could be a neat challenge.

i'm not an avid rider now, but used to be. what you could do is scope out some 5 mile rides where it's five out and five back. work your way towards the round trip.

my brother had made a chart in highschool of all the mileage in the area so he could go jogging. was really helpful!

good luck!

I did a ten-mile ride last night, with lots of hills, so I wouldn't think that the ride itself would be a problem for someone like you who is in good shape.

You would have to modify the armor so that you don't get heatstroke, though. When I rode last night, it was around 40 with a light breeze, and I was wearing minimal gear (no fleece, no baclava, no tights under my pants, no second pair of socks). I was getting close to uncomfortably warm and quite sweaty.

Like julishka says, do some test rides with some dress rehearsals.

Quite honestly, I would LOVE to do a charity bike event. I once did one that was 30 miles, and loved it. In fact, I'm fully planning to get a babyseat for Sammy (Tommy has an adult-sized mountain bike that I could easily use). Please keep me posted, I'd really love to participate.

The ride I'm thinking of is on Sunday 5/21. Here's the info:

I'll let you know soon if I'm going to do it. Either way, I'll be there (riding or trooping).

hmmm will the 501'st be having a team on the ride?

curious now..that looks like a good event to support.

10 miles was adventurous for me when I was starting out. even if one is fit, there are muscles that might need a little development. Like, I remember doing a ten-ish mile ride from Cambridge to [livejournal.com profile] ahaseurus's in Newton and that felt like it took forever when I first did it.

not sure if the Esplanade has thawed out in this weather, but Waltham to Museum of Science and back again is a nice, easy (ie. flat) ride that makes for an easy initiation. The sidewalks on Mem. Drive are certainly thawed.

What's the distance of the charity ride?

Its this ride http://www.tbts.org/itemDetail.asp?categoryID=200&itemID=16308 , so you choose a 10, 25 or 50 mile route (ends in Waltham near the Cambridge Resevoir). I'd imagine its a pretty route!

I'm contemplating doing a charity walk in May. I think we're just pining for Spring. Will you be at sewing circle on Sunday?

Sunday

I will be at sewing circle, so I'll see you there if you're going!

And I just added you to my friends list, hope you don't mind :)

That's cool---do it!!

I used to do bike-a-thons for Cystic Fibrosis research, and we would do loops of about 6 miles, repeated throughout the day. It was pretty easy, and I know you can do it! Picturing Brian in stormtrooper armor bicycling, now that's funny! You cannot see out of those helmets worth a damn!

Brian, that is amazing. You can so a trillion things with computers, make a fucking Tie Fighter in your yard, but cannot ride a bike!

***snicker****

How are you, anyway?

I'm a physically active person but not a biker by any means. I have a cheap silly little mountain bike that I got a few years back. I had never ridden a bike before the age of about 24 seriously..I worked up to the point a couple of summers ago of being able to do about a 22 mile bike ride without too much discomfort. It didn't take much. I only rode my bike about once a week in the warmer months on weekends on a nice stretch of paved trail here (I'll never be able to bike where there are cars) amd by the end of that summer I was doing a 10-13 mile stretch on the trail and then turning around to come home. I will admit that my butt was VERY sore and unhappy during the last 5 or so miles, but it can be done. So just work up to it..i'm sure even training on an exercise bike in bad weather at the gym will help too.

I think devnul did that last year.

Tammy got me Queen's greatest hits 1, 2, and 3 for Christmas. I still love them. I don't think there will ever be another band like them. They had such varied and unique musical styles and song subject matter, and yet, you could always tell it was Queen.
