Return to Innocence
Jan. 12th, 2001 09:25 amLast night was the best, most relaxing one I've had in a long time. Instead of going to the weekly Diesel Netgoth Coffee night B and I decided to spend the evening together, which we haven't done for any extended period of time in a long while.
I got out of work early to go see "Antitrust" with B, Bratty and A - it was great! One of the big sponsors of the movie, RSA sent some free tix to B and B (and even gave us coupons for free popcorn and drinks). First of all, I think Ryan Phillipe is wonderful - he's great looking and a good actor (at least in what I've seen him in which has only been a couple of things). It was a pretty techie audience, all with cell phones, most with black clothes and pony-tails. The movie was realistic and suspensful. And the open-source geeks will LOVE the ending!
After the movie B and I went home and had grilled cheese for dinner (yay comfort food)! We decided to go out, just the two of us to Borders Books & Cafe. Back when I was in college we were there a few times a week, poking around at the discount books, hanging in the cafe (I would bring my homework, B would grab a stack of geeky books and keep me company). Sometimes we would be so broke that we'd end up returning cans and bottles and using the change to buy our 2 cups of tea. It was so nice last night, wandering around and looking at various books - "what do I want to learn about tonight". B and I discussed where we would go for our Anniversary this year . . . its looking like somewhere on Cape Ann (perhaps Rockport) will be the winner.
After Borders we decided to go home and continue the shmoopiness by cuddling and watching a movie - poor Brian, I subjected him to "Center Stage" which I just bought on DVD. Its pretty much a modern-day version of "Fame" with better choreography and cooler costumes. I like this movie though, it touches on the realities of being a dancer, weird shoe-prep rituals, injuries, body image, 'stage-moms' and the conflict between dance as a science, and dance as an art.
Last night did so much to relax me and I feel very refreshed. I'm looking forward to seeing people this weekend and getting back to my normal life.
"Love After Love" by Derec Walcott
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other's welcome
and say, sit here. Eat
You will love again the stranger who was you self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you have ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
