Quote of the Day
"Never lose a chance of saying a kind word."
- William Makepeace Thackeray

OK, nice middle name . . .

Also from the Intranet:
"As part of several Diversity Council initiatives, the *company* Diversity Gallery at our Watertown site showcases community artists and their work. The goal is to provide a venue for local artists to exhibit work that reflects the *company* employee population, while connecting *company* more closely with the communities that we serve. Currently, we are celebrating the month of June, Gay Pride Month by hosting the artwork of *artist*."

Neat!

B and I walked down to The Common tonight to sit on the grass and eat our dinner while listening to some free, cheezy and local music.

You see, as long as we've been living at the Shaghaus I've been saying each summer - each Tuesday night - that I wanted to walk down for one of those concerts. They are the silly community things that my Grandmother used to bring us to when we were kids. The old ladies would bring their lawn chairs and clap and sing out loud while the kids ran around like maniacs or danced up in front of the band. I performed at many a Mayor's picnic with my dance studio on Saturday mornings when I used to take lessons with Peggy (despite the fact that tapping on concrete really isn't a smart thing for your shoes or your shins).

The group that was playing is one of the ones that plays a few times each summer - The Reminisants. They play pretty mediocre 50's and 60's music and wore bright fuscia matching shirts to go along with their antics (they even seemed to have fans in the audience that had matching black and pink monogrammed satin jackets). B and I picked up some subs at Mimi's (the little place at the train station) and then headed up the hill to the center of The Common, parking our butts on the grass.

It was like I went back 8-10 years to the days when we still lived in Wellesley and it was a big deal to come to Waltham and visit my Grandparents on vacations since they'd always make an effort to entertain us and fill the days with interesting things - these were the days when we'd go to Waverly Oaks Park and get something from the Ice Cream Man every night! It was a mostly senior citizen crowd with some younger people (mostly schmoopy couples like us). Children ran around and there was the occasional de-institutionalized mentally ill person or drunk guy; these later two seem to be rampant across the city. We sat there and listened to bad, cheezy music as the band tried to coax everyone to sing, dance and clap along. They kept making references to the city and how most of them grew up there. The singer even kept boasting about some of the restaurants and how we should all go buy some pizza from the table over "theya" where the Chateau was selling some of their "famous" food. God, the guy even remarked on how they've called the band "The Italian Triangle" due to the three main members being good ole' Waltham guidos and then they sang "That's Amore" (my grandmother would have been so excited)!

**********

Yeah, I'm a big cheezeball but I like things like that. I'm excited that we're buying our own home and starting a new life together. But I'm feeling defeated that we couldn't stick around here and i'm really going to miss it. I'm just an old softie :/
