Stuff to say but
Sep. 15th, 2004 08:43 amno time to say it . . .
I'm psyched I can go home after work tonight and get a jump on homework. We'll be at Dark Sky tomorrow.
I'm reading about the influence of the mass produced mechanical cotton picking machine, causing the massive migration of African Americans from the South to the North post WW2 in search of work. Its estimated that around 8 million moved to find work after technology made them obsolete in the South, and its said to have been the largest migration our country has seen in history.
Its been a lot more interesting (and less depressing thus far) then reading this
whole book last week. Of course, now they are all in the excited "oh, lets go North for better jobs and more money" stage - they haven't yet found discrimination also in the north, and a lack of jobs. I also have a couple of articles to read about the criminalization of drug and child abuse (i.e. when and why they were criminalized - because they've certainly been happening forever). The goal of this course will be to develop skills of looking at policy analytically (to simplify).
Class last night was a good one - we had some good discussion, the time went by fast, and the professor let us go a half hour early. Of course, they CLOSED the Mass Pike so I had to go into the new northbound tunnel and get Storrow to drive home. Traffic is trying to drive me nuts this week, I swear (and in most cases its Rt 93 that's the culprit).
Ah well, at least I'm not going home to Framingham :)
