Goodbye to the Deck
Jul. 21st, 2007 10:42 amThe backstory to this, is that to convert my old home to a legal 2-family my Dad (to meet code) needed to remove the family deck to allow for 4 unobstructed parking spots. At the moment they can fit back there, but its got to be tandem parking. A new hole was made in the side of the house to allow a second exit for the 2nd floor dwellers (staircase down to a tiny new deck). The old shed which sits under the new staircase was also cut shorter to accomodate for all of this.
Many hours have been spent on the old deck with friends and family. Where there was once grass and a pool there is now paving, though the sides of the property where old family pets were buried and where some trees were planted are still intact.
The house kind of ceased to be my childhood home a long time ago as it was cut apart, divided up and our family feeling was removed (both physically and symbolically). This was the last step in that whole process.
