Practical

As my family has gotten more practical about things over the years, we tend to gift a couple of hands-on things to open and then some gift cards over the holidays. I had some fun spending some of that money the day after Christmas, going down a wish list of sorts of mostly practical things I had stored on a list in my iPhone. I love, love, love the apple "Lists" app.

I've been in need of some more dance tights since I end up ripping holes in the toes of mine, and so Amazon provided me 3 pairs. With the little bit of $ I had leftover there I picked up http://www.amazon.com/Spontaneous-Healing-Discover-Enhance-Maintain/dp/0449910644 . I've seen this guys face on books for years but hadn't done much digging into his principles, but this particular book came up on a blog that I read recently. I think I like the balance of modern and traditional medicine here, and at $10, I figured it was a good investment. I'll post a review once I'm able to dig into it.

Flipping through, he has tips for an 8 week overhaul of your life, most of the concepts are basic and reasonable ones that you hear elsewhere. One of them was to take a break from news, spending one day in the week, then two, then three, etcetera, trying to ignore news information. At the end of the experiment you are to evaluate how your life is different and if you wish to start following the news again. Typically I listen to WBUR into the office each morning, but once I get to my desk I receive an e-mail from them with links to the articles on the same topics. Overkill? I decided instead to listen to the local classical station again, mostly music and less talking and advertising than the other stations on my dial (rock, alternative, college radio). I found myself in kind of a daydreamy space, listening to the music and making connections between the instruments and other things in my life. The piano heavy songs made me think of ballet class. The lute-heavy songs of Ren Faire and our Medieval wedding. I got to the office happy and feeling rested and ready for the day, mind and eyes clear.

Placebo effect? Maybe. Either way, I'll take it.

Tonight we're celebrating a birthday with a friend over Chinese food, and rocking out with Waltham peeps tomorrow. Dim Sum Saturday, another friend's birthday celebration over bowling, and then are hosting a costuming/geek social day on Sunday. I'm off Monday for a doctor's appointment. I'm a lucky gal!
