Happy NYE Everyone!

First the school stuff, my GPA for the semester was 4.0 (two A's, whoot!) and my cumulative GPA for the program is 3.92. Double rock. I am now officially done with 1/2 of my Master's degree.

I got my spring tuition bill in the mail yesterday, ouch! This is the first time I'm paying for 9 credits at once (3 classes worth) and it came to around $3300. I know this is cheap compared to private colleges so I'm not complaining but man, only $900 of that is tuition (the rest are fees - or rather, funds to end up in Bulger's pocket). Its a good thing that I got that Christmas bonus for work, I don't know how I'd pay for it otherwise.

The visit with my HS friend was very nice. We made fajitas for dinner and then chilled in her apartment. She's REALLY big into scrapbooking and is a consultant for http://www.creativememories.com/ . If anyone wants to buy stuff or host a party (where she teaches lessons on scrapbooking techniques) please let me know - her stuff is looking really good.

My sister's looking into an undergrad course at Umass to fulfill a prereq requirement. She'd mentioned that the class was $1300, and I told her to double check, because that's way more expensive than it was when I was in school there. She did, and it's accurate - that's only about $200 less per course than Suffolk. Ouch.

Well I'm sure that the class tuition is only around $300 (the fees make up the difference).

My fees at Simmons for a year were $200 total. The tuition on the other hand was $13k :) The program that I was looking at at Brandeis was almost $3k per class, so I can handle $3300 for three at UMB :)

What kind of class does your sister need? Could she get the same thing at a community college? They still seem to be cheaper than Umass Boston.

*nod* Suffolk's less expensive than most other private schools - fees are about $40/year for part time student, and classes are $1500/3 credits. But that doesn't help if it's inconvenient to take classes there.

She needs a chemistry, and an anatomy & physiology class to get into hygienist school. Umass was the only place she found that had a Spring semester class that fit into her work schedule. As it turns out, Umass -also- requires a prerequisite for their chemistry classes, so she's going to take the calculus at Massasoit.

Have you thought about applying for scholarships? They're tougher to find for part time students, but as a woman with a GPA that high, I'm sure you could get -something-.

I know that I'm not eligible for need-based scholarships (i.e. financial aid) . . . Brian and I combined make too much money for that.

Merit based - you know, I never thought about it :). At Simmons I gathered that Grad Students didn't have much assistance outside of loans or graduate assistanceships (which at UMB would only cover tuition, and I don't have the time to spend the hours at the assistanceship to get the benefit). I know that there are also tons of research grants out there for people in programs like I'm in, but since I'm not doing a full blown thesis (i.e. I'm not collecting my own data - I'll be using data from some other source like what I have access to at work, or through a data library at Harvard) I don't really *need* grant money.

I do have some tuition reimbursement - the thing that sucks is that it only covers tuition. Tufts covered everything (they figured, since the tuition was so low they could also swing covering fees). At least I got a big raise out of coming here - but most of it goes to gas money, tuition that doesn't get reimbursed that did previously, and higher insurance premiums.

On the GPA note, it seems like its not so much of a big deal as a Graduate Student as it was as an undergrad (i.e. EVERYONE in the program has to get at least a B to remain in the program, so people tend to do well in classes or they drop out).

I would happily attend a party...their stuff is great and I've wanted to do some scrapbooking for ages!

Congrats on the grades, and Happy New Year :)
