Happy NYE Everyone!
Dec. 31st, 2003 08:25 amFirst the school stuff, my GPA for the semester was 4.0 (two A's, whoot!) and my cumulative GPA for the program is 3.92. Double rock. I am now officially done with 1/2 of my Master's degree.
I got my spring tuition bill in the mail yesterday, ouch! This is the first time I'm paying for 9 credits at once (3 classes worth) and it came to around $3300. I know this is cheap compared to private colleges so I'm not complaining but man, only $900 of that is tuition (the rest are fees - or rather, funds to end up in Bulger's pocket). Its a good thing that I got that Christmas bonus for work, I don't know how I'd pay for it otherwise.
The visit with my HS friend was very nice. We made fajitas for dinner and then chilled in her apartment. She's REALLY big into scrapbooking and is a consultant for http://www.creativememories.com/ . If anyone wants to buy stuff or host a party (where she teaches lessons on scrapbooking techniques) please let me know - her stuff is looking really good.

Re: UMB
Date: 2003-12-31 07:34 am (UTC)I know that I'm not eligible for need-based scholarships (i.e. financial aid) . . . Brian and I combined make too much money for that.
Merit based - you know, I never thought about it :). At Simmons I gathered that Grad Students didn't have much assistance outside of loans or graduate assistanceships (which at UMB would only cover tuition, and I don't have the time to spend the hours at the assistanceship to get the benefit). I know that there are also tons of research grants out there for people in programs like I'm in, but since I'm not doing a full blown thesis (i.e. I'm not collecting my own data - I'll be using data from some other source like what I have access to at work, or through a data library at Harvard) I don't really *need* grant money.
I do have some tuition reimbursement - the thing that sucks is that it only covers tuition. Tufts covered everything (they figured, since the tuition was so low they could also swing covering fees). At least I got a big raise out of coming here - but most of it goes to gas money, tuition that doesn't get reimbursed that did previously, and higher insurance premiums.
On the GPA note, it seems like its not so much of a big deal as a Graduate Student as it was as an undergrad (i.e. EVERYONE in the program has to get at least a B to remain in the program, so people tend to do well in classes or they drop out).
