Some kind of hawk? Brian saw it outside of our window sitting on our fence and ran out to take pictures . . . wow!

That's what I thought, only the colored parts on this bird look purple in the pics (perhaps it was just a distortion through the camera).

Still, I've never seen one just hanging out in someone's yard before :)

this is a cooper's hawk:



they look a lot alike. tom got me on that path, as a bunch of peregrine sites said that cooper's hawks are often mistaken for them.

cooper's hawks are also known as chicken hawks. like "i'm a chicken hawk and you're a chicken"

it's not a kestrel, another similar bird... kestrel's are too small.

It's definitely not a red tail. But that's about all I Know. The feathers are all wrong for a red tail.
