According to WFNX, Colin Powell put in his resignation (I hadn't heard anything about it on NPR this morning).

I'm holding my breath to see what new Administration and Supreme Court justices will bring . . .

Bush might be able to appoint up to 3 justices in the next 4 years.

Very scary thought

It has been rumored for months

It has been on open secret (aka rumor) that Powell would not serve a second term for many months. It will be interesting to see who replaces him. Will it be another foreign policy "realist" or will the neo-conservatives take over the Department of State too.

It is rumored that UN ambassador John Danforth or Condoleezza Rice will take over his position.

Powell publicly announced about a year into Bush's first term that if Bush got reelected, he would leave the cabinet.

I've been curious to see if he'd stick to it.

Senator Liberman of Connecticut is the rumored first choice

The name I've mostly heard Rice and Danforth, though my fear it will be someone who worked for Perl. Where did you hear Liberman? It would probably be a good choice from a "healing the country" perspective given him being a Democrat, though his foriegn policy is a bit closer to the neo-cons from what I've seen. He is your Senator what do you know of his Foreign policy?

PS. Also in the "healing the country" vien I think we need to start a bipartisan company to produce open source voting machines with paper trails and good auditing systems. I miss the days when people trusted elections were fair (even if they never really were in some states).

GOP circles...rumor is Rice will be replacing Rumsfeld who is going to be asked to resign over AG (delayed because of the press's obvious desire to elect Kerry and the resulting administration refusal to give them ammo).

I like him well enough.
