Monopoly is doing away with its cash:

Its for real:

This makes me sad, because the best part about Monopoly was balancing the cash and playing with it in your hands (unless that's just my own dorkiness). And no more dog or shoe or top hat!? Travesty!

They did this with the game of life and a few other games too. I think its sad for a few reasons-but mainly because it takes away the learning experience for kids about counting out and using money in a fun way. And we wonder why teenagers can't count out correct change when their register isn't working...

This is a new edition.  The cash edition is, and always will be, available:

Yeah, but if you put it on credit, you don't have to pay at all until the end of the month!

I'm glad my folks kept all our old board games!

Actually you don't even have to do that. You can just pay your minimum balance and pay for it in perpetuity!

At first I was thinking "omg, money management skills gone! Kids will learn to charge charge charge!"

Upon reflection though, this is how it is more likely kids will buy things. They use debit cards and paypal. Discovering that those cards aren't magic but that the money will in fact run out is probably a much more valuable lesson in today's plastic and virtual money economy.

Funny, I just read the other day that there's more Monopoly money printed in a year than real money in all the countries of the world.

I think it's rediculous. I thought the whole point was learning how to handle money?
