The Super

I was telling my coworker about the old Waltham super. I am dying to find pictures of the old meat department murals, but Flickr never turns anything up.

I've found the outdoor sign which is still there http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Waltham_supermarket_sign.jpg and an old bag http://www.waltham-community.org/images/WalthamSuperBag.jpg . I even found a reference in a book about it .

Does ANYONE have any photos of the old super? I'd also love to see some of the bakery with all of the fake wedding cakes in the display behind the counter. And the little motion-controlled gates that would welcome you to the store. I've been dying to share these with Brian for years.

I remember that sign and place! I wonder if my Mom would have any, I'll ask her.

I'm not sure if it was the same supermarket or not, but my parents used to take us to a supermarket back in the 70s/80s that had huge murals in the meat department, all Native Americans hunting buffalo and the like. --just read the book reference, and if it wasn't the same supermarket, they bought their murals at the same place :)

It had to be the same place - apparently the meat department was famous, at least according to the scan of the old paper bag it was. :)

I was in high school when Shaws took it over, and promptly laid off most of the employees. This included my Aunt, who had worked in the bakery since high school and had planned to retire there. I'm pretty sure she has some old photos from their final days, but I have yet to get them and scan them.

Shaws sold to Victory who sold to Hannaford, which I like quite a bit. I have no doubt that I enjoy Hannaford more than I would the old Waltham Super, but I would still love to find some pictures of it.
