Someone posted this article to a list that I'm on:
http://www.boston.com/globe/calendar/dropping_in/

I miss the Rat :( I went to my first hardcore show (of many) there; it was an all-ages one on a Sunday afternoon and it was to see http://www.wonderdrugrecords.com/sbc.htm and http://www.roughedge.com/cdreviews/o/onlylivingwitness.htm with my friend Melissa. It was before they re-did the basement and added all of those rubber rats in the wall with the red glowy-eyes. I was in heaven :)

I wish I still had my first Sam Black Church album; it was from http://www.taang.com/ when they were still based in Boston and had that great teeny store in Harvard Square (sigh, I miss that too). Such greats such as the early Bosstones and Slapshot hailed from those studios . . .

Other fun all-age show haunts were of course the Middle East downstairs, that church in Harvard Square over across from OONAs that has the yard sales during the summer all of the time, Club 490 in Fitchburg and this little divey VFW Hall (or was it an Elks?) In Worcester. I was never able to get my butt out to the Espresso Bar unfortunately - there is a great article here discussing the scene at the time and what happened to it: http://www.worcesterphoenix.com/archive/features/00/04/28/HARDCORE.html

Does anyone out there want to hit a hardcore show with me sometime soon (and/or a Ska show?) I'm really missing it lately for some reason

OH OH ME! PICK ME!

i totally miss the rat (sniff). for two (miserable) years of grad skewl in boston, 93-94ish, nearly every weekend i'd make a trek from NU to mass ave N to comm ave W to the rat, get sloppy drunk hanging out (yeah, i remember seeing sam black church a lot back then ... i didn't really get into that style at the time, i think i'd appreciate them more now). then the sloppy drunk shuffle home, E to mass ave, S to huntington, and W to NU apartment :-). i still consider myself lucky to have beat the odds for over a year, never having gotten mugged.

mmmm... quick dinner upstairs at the rat ... mmmm.... (i kid, but i also did it nonetheless... gag)

wow! I had completely forgotten about the 490 club in Fitchburg!
I remember seeing Only Living Witness and Wargasm play there, in '94
or so! Did you ever go see shows at the "Chapter 2" a.k.a."the escape club" in Salisbury, MA, up on the coast? They had such great shows!!

Dude!

I used to go there all the time (I think it was called "Sneakers" before Chapter 2 and The Escape Club, yet I never made it there in that iteration). I had friends that used to play there all of the time in addition to other random shows. My friends and I used to get all dressed up and walk up and down the boardwalk to try to meet guys before the shows :)

We were also blessed for a little while to have Club Surrender - which was in my hometown and within walking distance to my house.

Yeah! That was a great period of time to catch metal/hardcore shows! One of my favorite times, I used to roadie for Conspiracy, and I saw like 20 shows for free, and had fun seeing tons of indie bands, like Sam black church(whose singer,Jet, is a high school teacher out where I grew up)..
hopefully, rock clubs will make a comeback !

Ok, I am now very nostalgic.

Not sure if I should thank you...
