oh, I don't know ... you can find a whole lot of self-righteousness on the West Coast if you spend a little more time there. There will always be folks who enjoy brandishing their virtue like a billboard, and whether that's eco-sensitivity or racial tolerance or Christian charity is almost immaterial. It's not an East\West or Blue\Red thing. It's just an overdose on plain human pride. Main thing is not to let the presence of the holier-than-thou spoil one's perception of the good that they profess to espouse.
With that said, it's always great to see when conservation is not seen as exceptional but just matter of fact. We were in Ottawa last year, and were talking to some friends who were discussing the new citywide composting initiative. Every household now has compost bins, in addition to recycling and regular trash receptacles. They said it was interesting to actually realize how much of what they were throwing away was actually compostable, and also how much of what was not compostable or recyclable was just ... packaging.
