Generator?

Since having Mina I've been less happy about our winter storm power losses, mostly lack of heat. We don't have a fireplace (no rooms large enough). We have a small gel-candle fireplace https://www.realflame.com/ in our den that throws a good deal of heat actually, but the 3 candles burn out in 3 hours. And keeping Mina away from it this winter will be an interesting prospect. Last year we built a gate over it, but since she is bigger/arms longer/can climb, we'd have to close half the room off to keep her from touching it.
So yeah, heat. We could purchase a gas generator, but how to hook our heat into it? Would we fill with gas or could we hook into our own natural gas system? Or just keep it simple, fill with gas ourselves and plug an electric space heater into it. That wouldn't save us from frozen pipes in the house in an absolute terrible, extended no heat situation. But, our house is insulated.
It is a game of odds. We never had a generator in our house growing up, though we did have a fireplace. Hrm.
I think ranging in costs/simplicity a fill it yourself generator + a space heater is the cheapest, where a hooked into the gas/hooked into the boiler system is the most expensive. I just don't even know where to begin comparing the options.
Least of all I should put some water and nonperishable food and small propane tanks for our camp stove in the garage. And a pet kit.
