Crashing Waves
Aug. 2nd, 2001 07:48 amEver wonder what its like to see the most high tide ever under the almost-full moonlight? Something funky was in the air last night in Hampton, NH (heh - perhaps it was Seabrook?) causing the waves to come up OVER the wall and onto the sidewalk in the street!
B and I took a trip down with S and A to see the fireworks and play some well deserved skeeball after everyone's tiring days. This time we stood over near where they were shooting said fireworks off down by the Casino. I don't think I've ever smelled sulfur before last night.
We attempted to collect shells again like we did last time; once the tide moves out you can find lots of critters and critter remains on the sand (including an odd "Blair Witch Projected esque" pile of shells). It was at a funny time though and the tide was starting to come in (perhaps it has something to do with the nearly fullness of the moon?). I've never seen the sand on the beach at the point where it drops off and gets deep . . . and there were large hills of sand surrounded by pools of water (like, there was water directly in front of us when looking toward the ocean but then 100 feet further forward there were people standing on little 'sand islands'). They were walking on water, sort of.
Then we headed down the boardwalk to get some salt water taffy. I wish I liked the texture of that stuff because it comes in so many neat flavors! I resisted the urge for Blink's Fried Dough, Boardwalk Fries, Fresh Lemonade and a Rootbeer float (the finest comfort foods of life) and I grabbed some water instead. I know that the beach is salty - but why does BREATHING and WALKING in it make one so thirsty?
After S and I tried on some clothes in one of the little hippie-like stores (she some Chinese Dresses and me some gauze sun dresses) we decided to head home. And this is when the most amazing thing happened! Walking back to the car B and I saw a group of people on the sidewalk watching for waves and running into the street from time to time to keep dry. I've spent a lot of time at that beach since my parents used to own a summer home there as a child and I've never seen anything quite so amazing!
Technology, Fads, Art and fancy talk can all be wonderful things and it seems that we all strive to achieve them. If only we slowed down at times to witness the true awe of nature in the unexpected places that it can lurk.
I can still smell the salt and hear the waves crashing as I sit in my corporate cubicle this morning.
