We didn't have a full out whole, real vacation this summer in exchange for lots of weekend trips. I think this past one was the most eventful as far as schmoopy bonding, silliness with friends and experiencing new things goes.

Thursday was when B and I headed up to Newport ( http://www.newportmansions.org/ ). We spent the whole day walking around in the ocean breeze and checking out 4 of the 11 Historical Society's properties. I don't think wealth to that degree exists anymore (one of the Vanderbilts had more money than the US Treasury at one point!). Lavish excesses are always amazing to me; no matter how much money I have I think I'll still live a similar lifestyle and still buy the same types of things. B thinks I'm really silly for that ("Look - you have money, you can afford to buy a new pair of pants without arm twisting!").

Then we took the 'Camping with Drag Queens' experience (the phrase was coined on Thursday night) from Friday through Sunday, Provincetown U.S.A. ( http://www.provincetown.com/ ). Though the location of our campsite was quite lacking (right behind the dump station) the location of the campground was very conveniently located in Truro, just outside of P-town. After a nice, hot pay-shower, some Charles Bukowski and a greasy breakfast of eggs and bacon we headed into town.

I can't believe how much there is to do! I think we covered about 1/4 (if that) of the shops and didn't actually do any 'beaching' despite being on the Cape. We FINALLY went on a whale watch and saw a whole slew of them - I stopped counting when it got around 20 or so! And we took in a show at The Crown with Jimmy James, I think we were two of the only hetero couples in there. He was amazing! S and I both bought the two albums that he had available for sale and got his autograph and a picture (you can check him out at http://www.jimmyjames.com/ ).

B said that the feeling was kind of like going to Harvard Square for the first time as an adolescent. Thinking "wow, all this neat stuff exists here and FINALLY I am able to check it out". Overall it was a very relaxed atmosphere (except for the one homeless guy we encountered on the docks during desert that told us he got a new toy). I look forward to going back again to continue exploring, perhaps in the fall when its not so crowded and warm!

We didn't actually go to a T-dance as all my co-workers suggested and I do regret not spending time swimming or getting up close and personal to a lighthouse. I'm guessing though that if you went to the Cape for a week every summer you would never run out of things to do. It is quite different from the 'family vacations in the station wagon to the White Mountains' that we did all of the time when I was a child.

************

On the way down B and I finished reading "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" (rather, he read out loud to me as I maneuvered through the Sagamore Bridge traffic). We discussed the character's issues - the merely existing and not actively participating in life, his acting as others would like or expect and not as he really wanted to, his feeling "infinite" with friends. I think that even though its a summer high school reading book we can draw parallels to our own lives with it and I'm glad that I picked it up. We discussed where we are today, where we've come from and the various things that have effected that transformation. We called a long-standing problem by its name so that we can now acknowledge its power over us and we can move on. I guess in a way this weekend made me feel infinite.

And for those who asked, here's the info on the book:

So now I'm back at work, wishing I had some nice music to keep me company while going through bunches of e-mail and voice-mail from the two days that I was out (geez, what are they going to do in October when I'm away for a week?).
