I've taken up the tradition of getting a bagel and cream cheese down in our cafe on Friday mornings. Its not really good for my body but I only do it once a week (and all oatmeal and bannanas for breakfast make dancer a dull girl). It lends to the whole casual atmosphere of a Friday - its casual day, I'm sitting here in my jeans and sneakers and Dance Theater t-shirt munching on a bagel and sipping tea while I catch up with e-mail before finishing a big project. Its heavenly (God, am I easily amused) :)

They always play music from the 20's to the 40's down in the cafe. I don't know if I'd really call it a cafe, actually; its a teeny space with a little window to ask for food and there's about 7 tables and a couple of vending machines. The woman that works there in the morning is named Carol. Carol is someone you'd see working in Alice's Diner (though she's older than Alice was). She wears too much blue eyeshadow and really bright red lipstick and I bet she gets her hair done at her hairdressers once a week and wears housedresses and grows tomatoes. And she's RUTHLESS when you pay her with a $20 first thing in the morning (hence, why I always have exact change). But she's a sweetie - and we usually chat a bit when I go down there for my Friday morning bagel ritual.

Carol hates the music in there but she really doesn't have much choice since its controlled by the Management Company.

Today as I waited for my bagel to come out of the toaster I was awakened by the sounds of Judy Garland (last week it was the Andrews Sisters). *Melt* I think she's got one of the most beautiful voices that I've ever heard. People just don't sing like that anymore - its really sad. Where have our Judy's, our Patsy Clines and our Karen Carpenters gone?

I wonder what kind of music people 50 to 100 years from now will look back on as revolutionary. Will the old classics live on or will people some day remark about the emotion in Brittany Spears' voice (she's hot and all, but um, NOT!).

Our current culture is severely lacking in talent, I think.
