The Dad files, #253
Jan. 31st, 2002 01:14 pmMy Mom called me at work today and left a message on my voice-mail, something about "Did you know about that article you're Dad wrote for me? Give me a call"!
I knew that he sent the story of how they met to http://www.nhmagazine.com/ since they were requesting schmoopy stories of how people had met their significant others. They got in touch with him after they received it and asked for some photos and permission to print them with the letter in the February addition. He left a copy of the magazine open on the living room coffee table for her last night so she'd find it after a long night of overtime and babysitting; its titled, "Love at first Bite":
********
"Pizza was my quest one fine day in 1969 when I turned into a local deli to get lunch.
I went in the door and in the middle of the almost-empty establishment was a beautiful blond in a dark suede coat and tight jeans sitting alone, sipping a soda. I asked the man behind the counter who she was - he told me her name was Patty. I placed my order and walked all around the room to get a good look at this angel before me. I got a few good looks in and glanced away each time she looked up. Back then, you just didn't sit down and ask a stranger out just like that! However, I knew her girlfriend and got fixed up on a blind date a week later. We went to the Topsfield Fair and had a great time. For me it was love at first sight.
We walked around, ate some awful food and did some rides. Hand in hand on the ramp to a ferris wheel she was looking up into the colored lights with that long hair blowing in the wind like a shampoo commercial, me thinking "...man she is a dream come true." Just then a huge moth flies at high speed into her throat and she takes a huge choking fit, turning three shades of red.
Well, 32 years have passed, three kids, one grandchild and a lot of memories and to me, she will always be that dream girl in the deli I got to keep for a lifetime - moth and all".
