Katie Johnson, the 7-year-old daughter of 501st Legion founder Albin Johnson, ended her battle with cancer on August 9, 2005. Support from Legion members and from members of the Star Wars fan community has been ongoing since Katie's diagnosis, and has continued all over the world. Fans on two continents carried on with fund raising events that were scheduled to take place after the 9th, with the goal of raising money to help the family with medical costs.
The UK Garrison hosted the Kisses for Katie Charity Ball on August 13 at the Hilton Metropole Hotel, in Birmingham, England. Actor Jerome Blake (Rune Haako, Mas Amedda) was the celebrity guest for the ball, and surprised the gathered crowd by first appearing incognito in a Darth Vader costume. Blake removed his helmet to gasps and applause, then continued with the evening wearing the rest of the costume.
Four comedians joined forces for an evening of entertainment in Michigan, in a show they titled, "These Aren't the Comedians You're Looking For." The performers, Mike Bobbitt, PJ Butland, Corey Hall, and Scott Loftis, donated all proceeds from the event to help alleviate the Johnson's medical expenses, and to help purchase a decorative park bench that will serve as a memorial to Katie in her home town.
According to Bobbitt, the routines were filled with pop culture and Sci-Fi references, especially references to Star Wars.
"Being able to combine two of my favorite things, comedy and Star Wars, in order to do something good for someone was a dream come true for me," says Bobbitt.
We at Lucasfilm send our warmest and most supportive thoughts to Albin and the family and friends of Katie Johnson. Her story, and the stories of the fans who have gathered in love and support for Katie, have inspired and moved us all."
