Another Sunday, another weekend gone
Apr. 9th, 2006 06:30 pmWe caught "Take the Lead" this weekend with DW and his lady out in Framingham. It was better than I expected, which makes me happy. I definitely enjoyed the Mad Hot Ballroom documentary more, but I think that they did a good job bringing the idea to the masses in a way that would sell more than just strict ballroom. There were quite a few funny bits in the movie, and it did definitely get me moving in my seat.
Dance weekend would continue with a great ballet class yesterday morning (man, was I sore this morning!) and finishing off the Fame Season I box set in the afternoon (in addition to a lot of cleaning, reading and home stuff). I hooked up with Brian later that eve at a final party at The Sandweasel's before he moves away to GA (most partygoers were trooping at the Museum of Science with Anthony Daniels during the day, but I wasn't going to miss ballet class again). Its a nice, crazy group and its always nice to see people.
We've spent today ripping chunks of our back porch off, assessing what's needed to make it safe (with some help from Dad), spending $250 on wood and other supplies at Home Depot and then tossing them in the garage to deal with later (too cold, we're too tired). It will require more than we hoped (the stringers were trash and the fieldstone under the porch floor needs MUCH repointing!) but less then we feared, so I guess we can't complain.
As with any home renovation project, we are both reminded of the challenges involved when spouses that have very different working styles (for the most part, due to our very different childhoods) are put on a project together. Its always an adventure mixing my structured/blue collar work ethic with Brian's unstructured/do whatever he feels like at the time background. It is always a learning experience, and one I've come to expect over the years. :) Despite the efforts with the porch *and* our self exploration it will be worth it in the end. I'm looking forward to having structurally safe footing, a cleaned up yard and new patio stuff to enjoy it all from. On the way to the Depot we filled up the propane tank too, and I see much backyard entertaining (meat!) in the future!
