On the ride into work this morning, they were talking about the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and how in Sleepy Hollow NY there is a statue of Ichabod Crane and the headless horseman being unveiled today. They played a clip of an old Disney song from a headless horseman cartoon. It reminded me of a Disney Halloween video we used to have , which was basically clips of various Disney things that were spooky all put together. The whole Sleepy Hollow segment was on there, as was stuff from Fantasia and other things I can't remember now. It was a neat look at old Disney things older than me that I wouldn't have seen otherwise. My parents had it on VHS and it was one of the first videos we owned. I'm sure its in a landfill somewhere now.

Which reminded me of the Disney Christmas Video they had . It was the same thing - clips of various Disney shorts related to winter or Christmas. It had a segment with a couple riding on a horse drawn carriage in the snow, being followed by a chipmunk couple. It had Chip and Dale running around inside of a Christmas tree and being chased by Pluto. It had scenes with Mickey and Minnie ice skating. And other things I can't remember now. I'm sure this video is also long gone with other VHS tapes.

Thinking about it now, what a cool concept for a video! I'm not nuts about Disney and its treatment of women in their movies, but I did grow up with a lot of their characters. As these old VHS tapes go away and less is released on DVD, will new generations be able to see these things? Have you ever seen Steamboat Willie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steamboat_Willie? I have. It was on one of those comp VHS tapes.

Methinks I should do some googling to see if any of this is available on DVD (or get them on VHS and have converted to DVD). That and the Winnie the Pooh video we had that was actually our very first VHS acquisition, back when we were still living in Wellesley and EJ may not even have been born yet (YES! ITS ON DVD!). If there's one cool tech toy we ever had before anyone else, it was a VCR. My Dad had one of the first video stores in the Boston area as a customer at the time (with his old printing business) and they did a lot of bartering. We had an awesome TV and a VCR and a host of children's movies before anyone else did. I think it almost made up for our lack of an Atari, or a Nintendo until EJ was of age for it, or the junk food snacks kids carried in their lunch boxes, or the Disney vacations that everyone else seemed to go on.
