Someone special may be buying me a serger for my birthday - do you have any recommendations? I don't know a thing about them so I don't know what's good, bad or indifferent.
I've looked at Sears already (my machine is from there, I like their warranty/service plans) but their options were limited.
Thanks in advance!

Date: 2003-05-30 07:58 am (UTC)I don't know much about sergers but you may want to visit Marie's Sewing Center in the Wouburn Mall (next to Fabric Place). I purchased my regular Elna machine there and would really recommend them. They spent a lot of time with me and let me play around, even though the purchase price I would be spending was low relative to many of the machines they carry (you have to check out the computer-controlled embroidery machines!). Extremely helpful in helping me find the best machine fit for my needs, since up 'til then I'd never used more than straight/zigzag.
This wouldn't be the place to find a cheap machine, as they carry some high end brands (Baby Lock, Pfaff, Elna) but I was really impressed with the service. My machine came with a 30(!) year warranty from the manufacturer, and the shop offers a one-year trade-in plan -- you can trade in your machine for a more expensive one within a year, and the trade-in value is equal to whatever you paid. You also get one free class with purchase.
Oh, there's a website: http://www.mariessewing.com/
So I guess the short answer is: I don't know, but these folks would. :)

Date: 2003-05-30 08:02 am (UTC)I have a serger that I could show you on Saturday, but it's pretty old and would probably be more of a "what not to buy".
We need to have a sewing bee soon!
