that's really cool. i actually told a kid not to go to college last night- he wasnt' to go into construction or carpentry, he's already runnign his own business, and he won't LIKE four year od gettign a degree, so that he can do what he's doing now.

i'm really happy that i landed in carpentry, even with the BA, and i'm glad i went to college too. it's weird like that...

My Dad is a licensed and insured contractor (though he doesn't have his GC licence yet) and has found that he's been more sucessful BECAUSE he has a degree (he went to The Art Institute of Boston) and he ran a printing/graphic arts business for over 10 years after college (after PCs came out, it kind of killed a lot of what he did for people i.e. business cards, purchase orders, etc).

He's not "your average grunting working guy" so he can communicate more easier with the average paying customer (someone that's most likely gone to college and is in the white collar world).

So yeah, I think that there's lots of things you can get from a degree (other than student loan debt and a piece of paper), even if you're not in your originally chosen field :)

Congrats on the job, it sound really neat (from what Tember has said)!
