This weekend was one of nice, relaxed, happy sighs :)
On Friday we had a nice Indian dinner (our attempts at checking out the new Firefly's location in Framingham was thwarted by long waits) and watched the 5 minute long Clone Wars episode. After that we made fun of the first Friday the 13th movie. Brian picked up DVDs 1-8 (or what it 9?) at BJs for around $9 a piece a few weeks ago.
I did some homework and sewing on Saturday, followed by a visit with Gram (um, she's *really* not looking good, really), a tea at a friend's house, a wonderful bellydance performance out in Stow and a party in Everett. It was a whirlwind day!
Thoughts on the show and other Saturday things:
The dance group, the "hippy chix" were great. They were mostly women a lot older than me it seemed, and it was an eclectic mix of music and dance styles. There were a bunch of SCAdians in the audience in garb, which you don't see every day. One of them danced to a Godsmack song, another danced to a Metallica song followed by the Buffy theme song. They also did some great group numbers to "Wipeout" (go surfing bellydance!) and Lorenna McKennit's "The Visit" (a broom dance, very very pretty).
The director/teacher performed an amazing dance in the first half of the show where she walked out onto the stage area covered in a large black cloth with words painted on it like "fat", "ugly", "stupid", "guilty" on the front - on the back it had "I HATE MY BODY" painted across it. As the dance progressed she danced more, became more free, and she shed the mu-mu to reveal one of the most fabulous costumes I've seen in varying shades of red and orange - wow!
They practice out in Hudson which isn't too far from my house. I introduced myself to the teacher since we had had some e-mail conversations and she said she'd e-mail me to discuss their group and practices and such. I guess I'll just see where this goes. On the one hand it would be nice to connect with a group closer to where I live, on the other - we're not planning on living here forever. I think I've found that I love bellydance, I want to continue doing it. I want to do it in such a way though that I don't end up entranced in "the scene" in Boston that seems filled with lots of politics and gossip. That's the reason I left my old dance studio in Waltham in the first place! This group out in Hudson seems to be the kind of group that would work for me. Or maybe, I'd just stick with The Goddess Dancers but not do too much beyond classes and events with them. Who knows, I still have time to figure it out :)
After the show we got to see the eclipse outside in a clear western suburb sky. The winter sky is intoxicating - its very hard to stop looking at the stars (perhaps that's why its so cold out, otherwise we'd never move from that spot). I've been craving more time with nature, and for my own spiritual development. I can feel it taking a back seat again as it did when I was an undergrad. I can't wait for my re-awakening in lots of aspects once I'm done with school.
The party was fun - Brian was a bit freaked out to be walking around in Everett in silly clothes again (the place was 3 blocks from where he grew up).
Sunday, mmmm a brunch that lasted until 9:30 at night! I missed hanging around with friends in my PJs and doing silly things.
I feel truly refreshed after the weekend and am looking forward to the next month. Tonight is my last dance class - I'll have a bit more respite from activities in the next few weeks. On Wednesday I'll finally get to see Lacuna Coil. This weekend should be nice and relaxing, next Monday is the debut of my new Star Wars costume. Soon I'll be done with school for the semester. And then it will be Xmas. I can't believe how much faster time flies by the older I get.

Date: 2003-11-10 07:26 am (UTC)Hee hee, thanks! Angora bunnies are so funny looking, I'd love to pet and hold one but I don't think I'd ever want to own one . . . too much necessity in brushing them :)
I want a Rex rabbit someday, their fur is all velvety (how gawth!).

Re: Angoras
Date: 2003-11-10 08:00 am (UTC)Well, my guess is some people think they are cute, some people like the breed and do that breeder/showing thing, some people sell the fur (that's what angora sweaters come from)?
I don't know - I usually end up with bunnies that are mutts :)
Re: Angoras
Date: 2003-11-10 08:13 am (UTC)I was trying to imagine what sort of real world application bunnies like that would have. It now occurs to me that bunnies probably never had real life applications beyond general cuteness :). I guess I was looking at it from a dog owner perspective and trying to figure out what possible use they could have had.
Mutts are definitely the way to go. With the exception of Zhaan, all of my critters are refugee mutts from animal shelters.
Re: Angoras
Date: 2003-11-10 08:17 am (UTC)Well, what kind of real world application do dogs have? A pet is a pet is a pet :)

Re: Angoras
Date: 2003-11-10 09:46 am (UTC)rabbits? sadly... prey.
Re: Angoras
Date: 2003-11-10 02:46 pm (UTC)The origins of the dauschund was as a hunting dog, it was bred to fit down ferret holes I believe and chase the weasel like animals to the surface so that the hunters could kill them
But don't ask me the reason behind the afghan hound, or the shitzhu. Not a clue as to that.
it is rather unfortunet that most "purebreds" are so overbred and inbred that they all seem to have physical and mental flaws.

Re: Angoras
Date: 2003-11-10 08:32 am (UTC)Nah, ducks are cute, so I won't eat em (kind of like bunnies and cats and dogs).
Now chickens on the other hand - they don't inspire me to want to cuddle with them. :)
Re: Angoras
Date: 2003-11-10 08:55 am (UTC)Ducks are evil. We used to have some once upon a time and they were evil! Bunnies are cool though, we used to have those as well (my folks had a pseudo-farm type thing going on for a while).
I find it amusing how a critter's cuddle factor often determines whether or not it ends up as lunch.

Date: 2003-11-10 10:11 am (UTC)real life applications of raising rabbits
Date: 2003-11-10 02:42 pm (UTC)Those who raise them as a working animal and those that raise them as pets
Rabbit meat is eaten as food by humans. (not sure if it ever becomes pet food)
Rabbit fur is used for coats, trim and pet toys
Angora Rabbits are plucked or shaven (not sure which) and their fur is spun into angora wool which is made into clothing.
As I stated before rabbits are also raised as pets. Some people who breed bunnies do it soley for their own pleasure, others (i've had friends who did this) raise the bunnies to sell as pets to other people.
I believe the original reason rabbits were domesticated however was as food, much like the cow, sheep or pig. They just ended up being cuter than most other farm animals and eventually morphed into pets.
While I appreciate rabbits esthically, being allergic to them I have no desire to keep them as pets or wear their fur.
