On days that I have a 4:00 class I work 7:30 to 3:30 (but then take "lunch" at 2:30 and leave for the day to get to class on time). I just e-mailed my boss to see if I can work these hours next Monday to attend a party at Simmons. My faculty adviser/fieldwork coach and one of my mentors is retiring.
She's done a lot of amazing work, you can see her profile on the department website by clicking on "more info" under her name - Diane Coulopoulos http://www.simmons.edu/academics/undergraduate/psychology/faculty.html#
Apparently she's also active in a local greek organization: http://www.thegreekinstitute.org/about_gi.html
The last time I talked to her I was in the process of applying for grad school, and I called to ask her to write me a letter or recommendation. She did (though, she didn't give me a copy of the letter). I'm really curious to see what she wrote and keep forgetting to get it from the Umass Boston Registrar's office.
Its people like her that had a great contribution in making the Simmons experience a very special and useful one for me. There are a great bunch of professors there that have had some amazing experiences. Hearing her stories of doing research in Kuwait during the gulf war in the early 90's or hearing Steve London's stories of race riots and activism in Chicago in the 60's had a profound impact on me (you can see his short bio here - incidentally he went to grad school with and is buddies with the head of the Grad Program I'm in at Umass Boston, small world http://www.simmons.edu/academics/undergraduate/sociology/faculty.html# ). Its this kind of thing that I have yet to see at Umass Boston. I'm sure it exists here and there - but I think the sheer size of the institution and the fact that its a complete commuter school has its impact.
I wonder if any of my old friends will attend. Its weird, it doesn't feel like its been that long (its been 7 years, yikes!) but I can't remember where the Special Functions Room is (the place the party will be held at). I'm also wondering if they are going to let me park there, and *where* the parking is (since they've added a building in the parking lot since I graduated).
