I'm really enjoying the Motley Crue "Dirt" autobiography. Its written by all of the band members and other associated people (the guy that first signed them, producers, etc). I was too young to have followed them from the start so its neat to hear the stories from the guys themselves. Of course we all know about the women, drugs and the partying . . . its neat to see how they came from nothing and got to where they are today.

On the death of new wave and the birth of Motley-style metal:

From Vince Neill, pg. 90

"It was that day that new wave died and Rock and Roll took over: May 29, 1983. Day two of the three-day US Festival.

Circling above hundreds of thousands of kids in a helicopter - the first helicopter we'd ever been in - it seemed as if the scene on Sunset Strip on Friday and Saturday nights had suddenly been transported to a field in the middle of nowhere on a sweltering hot spring afternoon. Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, the Scorpions and Van Halen were performing in front of three hundred thousand kids. And so were we.

Every city in America must have sprouted its own equivalent of the Sunset Strip. This wasn't an underground thing anymore. It was a mass movement, and finally we were all meeting to put a new nation on the map. Looking down on it all from the helicopter with a bottle of Jack in my left hand, a bag of pills in my right hand, and a blond head bobbing up and down in my lap, I felt like the king of the world. That lasted for about a second, Then I got scared shitless"

The Crue would play "Shout at the Devil" to a massive crowd who hadn't heard it before who were really there to see Ozzy or the others - and they'd go nuts.

It would have been so neat to be there, only I was 8 years old at the time (only a year older than my nephew is now). Later I'd see the Crue in late 89' touring with what was their last good (imo) album, Dr. Feelgood. My friends and I always said we'd grow up to be their Nasty Habits (their dancers, for those not in the know) not realizing in our naive states what that probably really entailed (they mention one groupie that took a guitar neck in the ass - ouch)!

Anyway, long live rock and roll! I can't wait for their supposed tour to come around again . . .

sheesh... you think at the very least that they'd have more exciting things to put in womens' asses than guitars!
