Has anyone ever used a pedometer successfully?

My co-worker had one and said it was crap and doesn't work. It looks like the one I have is the same (its just frozen, and won't let me set it up).

Ah well - I guess I'll just have to guess how much I'm walking during lunch :/

Ideally it would count distance (the one I have that doesn't work does either distance or steps).

I'm getting the impression that I need to invest in a good one if I want it to work. Of course, its not a priority for me financially right now, so I don't see myself plunking $100 or so on one any time soon :)
