It looks like Brian and I WON'T be going to Arisia this year after all. Why? The Saturday day rate is $35. Why is it worth $35? No musical act announced yet, no major guests. I don't need to pay $35 (then parking) to hang around with friends . . .

That amounts to over a dozen people paying $35, then the money to park, so that we can try and assist drawing interest in popular Sci-Fi media to the con and do some charity fund raising. I doubt we'd sell enough raffle tickets to even meet the cost we paid to get in (so at that rate, we could all pay our $35 and parking fees directly to the charity and make out better for it).

There is one person in our group that actually actively wants to go to Arisia. The others (including Brian and myself) were giving it a 'last ditch effort' kind of thing since its the only large Sci-Fi con in the Boston area (in the traditional sense of con, Megafest is really just a big vendor/celeb room). Hell, the Dragoncon day rate was less than that and will only be $30 next year! Supermegafest (again, not a traditional "con", but still) which had a ton of celebs and vendors was only $15 (and they didn't even charge 501st members to come in, since we were in costume, doing charity fundraising and our table was comped).

Have fun y'all! Unless something changes with that day rate (which I highly doubt it will) you won't be seeing us there.

it's still being discussed, but there will be at best just a few passes, not ones for everyone.

Here the responce to your last message

Well if we weren't dong this so last minute It'd be a whole lot cheaper...

Okay I should be able to cover 7... Does that bring it in to where it makes sense? (I'm just going to cover what I need to out of pocket) I think we just need to get past this initial hurdle to make this good for everybody... and I'll throw some cash at it to try and make the problem go away...

The only reason I think we might even get near the fence is cuz Weta will be there. Other than that...

No, they won't. They've bailed. They wanted an appearance fee and wanted expenses covered. From what I've heard, the normal Arisia policy is to just pay expenses. As such, they won't be coming . . .

Oh, well then, that fence got further from me.

And saving the money isn't bad at all.

It's crazy how expensive it is--maybe they're genuinely pricing it out to only meet costs, but if that's the case, then maybe a less fancy or less central venue is in order. I've never gone though often the panels look interesting and it would be a neat way to network with other bellydancers, because I just can't justify the money.

I wonder about this quite a bit at this time of year. It is well attended, but it seems that most often people go because 'that's just what you do in January'. I'd never expect it to be on the same scale as other larger cons I've gone to or heard about - they just don't have the same resources. I think its reasonable though, to have pricing similar to other cons that are sized the same.

The dance class last year was very fun (though it was very beginner), taught by Nancy/Aurora from the Hippy Chix. It was a very good environment for chatting with other dancers. The drum circle was fun too - pretty well attended.

But, I don't want to pay $50 (weekend) or $35 (day) to take a beginner dance class or be in a drum circle :)

sigh. I know that Shadow and I really can't afford to go, even though we've been offered part of a room no charge... and I want to! But its simply because of Barbara Hambly. Wonderful author...

The hotel is crazy over-priced, and it's ALWAYS hotter than fuck at it too.
(Because it's winter in NE we must have it at 100 in out hotel lol !!)

But I go to see friends I don't see much of at any other times.
