Deana rocks. She gave me one of these http://pages.tias.com/10478/PictPage/1922235909.html that she found at the Brimfield Fair this past summer. I espescially love the quote on the side:"If you want the best specify 'Waltham' It only costs a trifle more."

I didn’t even know about this company! It resided on Pine Street (five or so blocks from our house, i.e. the street that the Embassy Theater is on).

Here’s bits I could find on the company from googling and different sites, neat!

1835 - Dr. Francis F. Field (a dentist) invents process for making chalk crayons; development of American Crayon Company.

Another company which commenced operations in the area of the Newton Chemical Company was the American Crayon Company. This had been organized to produce chalk crayons by a process developed by one Francis Field. The product became world famous. The Waltham name was spread at home and abroad by the use of Waltham Brand crayons in the schools. Eventually this company combined with another in Sandusky, Ohio, but continued to have an eastern office and warehouse on Felton Street until a New York office was established in 1919.

-1902, The American Crayon Company on Pine Street leaves Waltham and moves to Sandusky, Ohio. Dr. Francis Fields discovered crayon here in 1835.

Spurred by the educational need to teach his young daughter art, Louis Prang developed non-toxic watercolors. They were the first in a series of child-safe art materials developed by Prang. In 1856, Germany enjoyed a virtual monopoly supplying art products to America. Mr. Prang looked for an American company that could meet or exceed Germany’s high quality standards. He found the American Crayon Company and contracted exclusively with them to make his watercolors. In 1918, the American Crayon Company acquired the rights to use the Prang name and to produce Prang’s art materials. In 1957, the American Crayon Company merged with Joseph Dixon Crucible Company, which is known as Dixon Ticonderoga Company today.

Originally known as the Paramenter Crayon Company, the American Crayon Company began making and selling chalk in Waltham, Massachusetts. They are recognized as being the world’s oldest and largest manufacturers of crayons since 1835. The Paramenter Crayon Company merged with The Western School Supply company founded in the 1860’s. It soon became recognized both nationally and internationally for its contributions to schools. Eventually, The Western School Supply company became the American Crayon Company. Dixon Ticonderoga Company continues to manufacture Prang products with pride, maintaining the same high standards of excellence established by Louis Prang.

That’s so neat! This is why I love old things, its neat the history you can find in a little box. I need to find a good place to put it (where I’ll put a Waltham clock someday, whenever I get one). 
