Busy, busy
Jan. 17th, 2005 08:38 amIts quiet here at work today, and the commute was nice. Sometimes it sucks working for a place that never closes, but getting work done under these circumstances is always easier for me.
It was a good weekend, filled with a mix of activity.
On Friday we had a lot of fun at Xmortis (some pics, more to come - you can see me ready to feed DW some grapes here
). After an earlier rehearsal Brian and I grabbed dinner at a place in Central, India Pavilion. The food was mediocre, but I look to my left and see a high school friend of mine painted the mural inside link . Funny!
On Saturday I had yet another kick-ass ballet class, and we headed to lunch with friends at the Scotch Pine Farm in Pepperell info . Brian finally tried Haggis (as did I, I was unimpressed), and I bought a very pretty pin based on the architecture of Charles Rennie Macintosh (the Scot's version of Frank Lloyd Wright) another link . They were the best scones I've ever had and I'll definitely go back at some point! Apparently the place was first owned by an Anderson news article, about sale of the property , so it makes sense that they had a good deal of Anderson tartan stuff there (which usually is hard to find, despite it being a common name).
Saturday night brought a party with friends. Sunday brought a trip to Salem so Brian could get new boots at the Army Barracks, lunch with some 501st people, and relaxing around the house. After experimenting with cooking a homemade Indian dinner from scratch which didn't turn out bad at all (!) we finally saw Garden State, which I loved. Natalie Portman needs more opportunities to actually *act*, she's good at it (and the SW movies don't do her justice)!
Each weekend seems to get better than the next. Having free time is the most worthwhile thing in the world - its priceless!
Goals for the week: eating healthy, getting in some more workouts (in addition to dance class), ordering some spices from Penzeys to continue the cooking adventures, and working some more on Ashton's Han Solo muslin pattern.

Date: 2005-01-17 06:11 am (UTC)He doesn't have anything listed on his site for it. I'm wondering if he had a temporary exhibit there or something (a friend had told me his work was there, but I've never seen it, and the last time I was at the ME upstairs I didn't see anything painted).
Either way, he's got some funky stuff on there. Another friend of ours from that era is linked to his site - Dave Stoupakis. He's had stuff at Man Ray before, but it was YEARS ago (worth checking out) :)
Scotch Pine
Date: 2005-01-17 06:12 am (UTC)Yep. Soups, sandwiches, scones, tea, etc. They were very inexpensive too!

Date: 2005-01-17 08:41 am (UTC)We were only there for around an hour or so at the most (long enough to stop in Harrison's and Army Barracks). Brian decided kind of last minute :) I was thinking of you though, when we were heading home (and in the rotary opposite the commuter rail, down the street from your place.

Date: 2005-01-18 04:53 am (UTC)Heh, I was thinking they looked out of shape! I've gotten a lot softer around the middle over the last couple of years (read: grad school). I'm looking forward to having the time again to focus on getting in shape.
Let me know when Alli has the rest of the pics somewhere, I'm dying to see them. :)
Macintosh
Date: 2005-01-18 04:54 am (UTC)Thanks for the info!
How difficult is it to get to Glasgow from Edinburgh? We'll be staying in Edinburgh (and won't be renting a car) . . .
Re: Macintosh
Date: 2005-01-18 06:20 am (UTC)If you do go to Glasgow, go to the Willow Tea Room (http://www.willowtearooms.co.uk/) on Sauchiehall St or Buchanan. Its one of the tea rooms that CRM created and is absolutely gorgeous. And the Summer Pudding tea is my favorite.
Yum

It's very simple. There are inter-city trains which run between every fifteen minutes to every hour (depending on the time of day) that take one from Edinburgh Waverly or Haymarket (both in Edinburgh city centre, in different areas) to Glasgow Central or Queen St (both in Glasgow City Centre, not too far apart). It costs about £8 return during non-peak hours.
It's a good thing you're not renting a car -- Edinburgh and Glasgow are both hellish to drive in, albeit for different reasons.

Date: 2005-01-21 09:43 am (UTC)I can't believe I forgot to mention the Willow Tea Room on Buchanan St! I live less than a ten minute walk from there. The prices are atrocious for what one gets and the food isn't very good, but it's definitely worth a stop for tea and scones for Macintosh fans.

Date: 2005-01-21 09:52 am (UTC)Thats the tea room that I went to! :) That was one of the best parts of being in Glasgow for a week...that and the museums were free
