Our Sunday Globe wasn't out front. I called and within 15 minutes someone dropped one off, that's service!

I spent yesterday working on the front yard (man, am I sore now). I weeded the whole thing, moved a bunch of plants, and threw a way a few dead/ugly ones the former homeowners put there. After all was said and done it looked much neater and there was space for a couple of bushes. I grabbed a small spruce and 2 small holly bushes from Home Depot, planted, laid down landscaper's cloth and remulched the whole thing (phew). For not a lot of money and a bit of elbow grease its looking very nice, and should be easier to maintain. Now we just need to get some mason's cement and repair some of the bricks that have broken off the edging wall (next weekend).

We also picked up the wood for the den shelves and while I did the landscaping Brian measured, cut, sanded and stained them. They were left to dry/get the smell out overnight and we'll put them up in the den tonight. Whoot! The place will look more like a library :)

I love weekends - free time is the best. We hit The Crypt in Everett last night and it was spooky as usual, with a little better music mix, some more friends/people, and a small performance. The organizers are really trying to make the place work; the two performers walked around to every patron asking what they thought of the performance and if they had any suggestions for the place. I told them they had to have a halloween party (given the crazy decorations) and that Voltaire had to play there.

Today will bring putting up the shelves, visiting gram, playing with Leia buns, and veging while I stir sauce for hours. Man, I didn't know that 13 lbs of tomatoes added up cost wise so fast! Now, once canned how long can they sit? They aren't vacum sealed like the store stuff (we're putting sausage in too) . . .

Are you canning like grandmother used to? Ie, with the actual canning lids, and letting 'em boil in water for 45 minutes or so?

If so, than years. Though they'll probably be gone before spring. I know ours never last. :)

I haven't looked that hard, but if you buy a bushel of tomatoes at Verrill farms, it costs $25, and is about 20 lbs of tomoatoes. If you buy them individually there, it's $2.50 a pound. I know i spent almost as much for our bbq tomoatoes as I did for our canning tomoatoes. :-\

canning, etc

Grandmother never canned, this is all new to me :) I'll have to google and figure out what I'm doing. Though, I don't think the jars I have have the 2 lids - I got them at Xmas tree shop (figures - they hadn't had mason jars at the supermarket and then all of a sudden they did).

Thats about what I paid - $19 for 14 lbs at Russos. Its seeming to be WAY cheaper for using crushed canned. I'll do that in the future, but for now this works (I wanted to try from scratch at least once).

OK

We always have problems with the Sunday Globe at work. It's such a pain because many patrons look forward to it, but it often doesn't arrive until early - mid week.
