dancerjodiAfter being crazy productive around the house I watched some TV. Brian and I aren't big TV watchers at all, so I'm kind of ignorant about popular shows most of the time.
I caught up with the premiere season 2 episode of http://abc.go.com/primetime/dancing/. Watching ballroom dance always makes me so swoony. Its interesting to see how much better at dance your average celebrity is compared to your average everyday person (comparing to Ballroom Bootcamp). It makes sense, given that they'd have past singing or theater experience to draw on. Tatum O'Neal was absolutely beautiful in her dance for instance, and it was more due to her emotion and facial expressions than her movements. Tia Carerre was there after having a baby 3 months ago, and she looked damn good (and classy to boot). Schwing!
On a more serious note, I watched the first installment of 3 of http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/countryboys/ . It was my first time really seeing what its like to live as a rural poor kid (as opposed to urban, which I've had plenty of experience seeing and reading about). It always amazes me how strong kids can be and how resilient they are to adversity. If only that stuck with us as adults (sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't). It was a late night for me to watch the whole thing, but I felt that it was important (and I'm really curious to see where it goes). Also interesting is seeing the pervasiveness of conservative Christianity rampant in all facets of life (personally, school, publicly - in addition to at church). I think that's something we're lacking for the most part in the North, so its interesting to see it. If anything I'm glad that there was something for the metalhead kid to grab on to - he mentions that Jesus was what got him out of his suicidal bouts (for myself, it was music and friends, something that a freaky rural kid wouldn't have as much access to). He wears tons of Christian rock t-shirts that are often bastardizations of other bands ("Sin" written out like "Nin", "Jesus, Son of Man" written in the green glowy Marilyn Manson Font, etc) and is in a Christian rock band. This is another trend that you don't see so much in the North (beyond the popularity of the bumblebees, Stryper) to the same degree. Interesting.

Date: 2006-01-10 05:56 pm (UTC)RE Country Boys, I think you'd definitely enjoy it. I feel so much for these kids, and at the same time are just amazed at how good they are doing (considering what's happened). If you check the URL you may find repeats listed for part 1 (part 2 is tonight at 9).
