Angie's list

I'm wondering if any of you are members and would recommend joining? I think it could be a neat, simple way to check references for people (and given gradual work we want to do on our house, I'm thinking it may be a good idea). Has the cost been worth it to you?

The cost has been absolutely worth it to us. We now rely on the reviews of Angie's list members to find anyone to do...pretty much anything. We've been happy with everyone we've hired through it.

We just joined, based on sweets' recommendation! So far the only thing we used it for is to find someone who could look at the roof of our potential house. It worked well for that.

It looks like it'll be fantastic, actually. I did some searching for the kind of contractors we are likely to use and the information was excellent.

Its a membership site for people to find contractors, plumbers, etc - anyone who can service your home. People have profiles, reviews, etc. You can find more info here: http://www.angieslist.com/AngiesList/about.asp

I found it really useful for things we absolutely wouldn't/couldn't do ourselves, though I think I used it less and less as time went on and I found reputable repairmen. It's true that saying "I got your name off Angies List" prompts services to be nicer and diligent. never had to use their conflict resolution feature, but i got a really nice, personalised email when i canceled my membership last year, so i hope that's a sign of the type of people they have on the other end helping people out.

THey're not only good for referrals for good people, they can tell you who to stay away from. And if you get a bad contractor, you have the pleasure of bad-mouthing them on Angie's. AND you get a newsletter with all sorts of useful hints. I'd say it's worth it.
