I'm proud to say that when they were done for the day the plumber told Brian our bathroom was indeed the worst they had ever seen. It makes you feel special.

There's lots of plumbing stupid in there. Apparently the drain to the tub was just sitting on top of the waste pipe - it wasn't actually attached. A large enough person showering in there and stepping on the floor could have moved it such that all of the water would have drained into our floor. Lovely.
It looks like the fake wood flooring was put on cement board, which is then on some ancient peel and stick tile, on the original floor. Bizarre.
Brian and I will spend the weekend gutting the room, walls and floor and he'll be able to run the outlet for the tub. The plumbers will come by most likely next Tuesday (they were already booked for most of Monday) and they'll start re-plumbing it all from attic to basement. Fun.
I'm glad I added another $1k to our budget. I'm not sure exactly how much the plumber's bill will be, but at around $150 or so an hour and a couple days of work ahead of us, its going to painful. I think we'll come in *just* around budget. Phew.

Date: 2007-03-30 06:50 pm (UTC)And how many times have I showered in there? I move around a LOT during that too. *shudder* I so would have freaked if you were away and something happened. (kinda like how every night I told Max "Not on my watch, please.")
If these guys are good, and maybe willing to travel, I have some bathroom work that needs doing, probably not replacing the tub, but some pipe and fitting work, and OMG I'd love to get rid of the cabinet/sink and put in a pedastal, and our medicine cabinet might not be legal. *meeps*

Date: 2007-03-30 06:54 pm (UTC)I thought the same at first, its just the room's door open all the way (the wall is completely gone, save for the studs). :)

I think they meant really big, as in 'can't get out of bed by myself' big :)

They are good, and pretty experienced. My Dad suggested them but they've also had a lot of good reviews in Angie's List. I'm not sure about the commute though - they tend to stay in Waltham/Newton/Watertown. Most often construction or trade related people tend to stick close to home - particularly if they have a busy practice and don't need to branch out. If I think of it though, I'll ask :)
Re: bathroom
Date: 2007-03-30 07:01 pm (UTC)I forgot about Angie's List - I'll see if the one my mom wants to use has a recommendation. We definately need the work done on the fixtures (they might be original to the condo. Not good) and I'd have to pay for anything about that (Bank of Mom will handle the rest, per our agreements on me taking over) I do prefer giving work to good guys, but not if they don't want to travel, I can totally understand that.
Heh - one of my clients is in construction, maybe one of their guys will come over - they OWE me for all the grief I get!
