We had dinner at Unos last night. They have a neat Kiosk right inside of the doorway for you to check nutritional information on things.

Brian had a deep-dish pizza with some chicken and peppers on it. I had the 4 cheese thin crust pizza. Now, we know pizza isn't the most healthy of items. We each ate 1/2 of our pizzas and had the rest for leftovers. The old us (pre WW) would have eaten the entire pizza and either split an appetizer or had dessert.

Each of those pizzas were 1700 or so calories. Damn! Figure a 2000 calorie a day diet or so, and pair that with a soda (few hundred calories) and that's the whole daily value in that one meal. Eating a thin crust pizza and only 1/2 of it I wasn't feeling stuffed or uncomfortable or anything. I did have a salad, so the bit of dressing on it (a vinaigrette) would have added extra calories. Brian didn't have a salad and was starving later in the night, but kept the desire for Ikea sticky buns at bay. Thankfully we had unsweetened iced teas, and no apps or desserts.

It goes to show why we Americans are so fat. That's one meal for two people in one night, and eating better than we used to we were still way over what our bodies needed. Damn! Its kind of a lesson to keep track of what you put into your body if you care about that sort of thing - it can creep up on you. :)

I know exactly what you mean. It did creep up on me! I stopped paying attention because I wanted to relax and enjoy life after the wedding, not worrying anymore about having to fit into a dress I'd paid a fortune to alter just right.

But now that there is extra "me" where there shouldn't be, I'm very unhappy and have gone back to paying more attention to what I eat.

Last night I went to make a recipe I haven't made in a while that is delightfully delicious, and realized halfway through that it calls for 2/3 cup of butter. We use light margarine, and even that has 7g of fat per tablespoon! I almost quit and stopped making the recipe, but then I realized that most of that butter is mixed with other ingredients and then poured over the chicken during the last 3 minutes of baking. You actually eat very little of that butter, but I cut the butter part in half anyway, and it still came out really well. But it's definitely those things that alert you to pay more attention to what's going into your body.

It's scary how packed with calories restaurant meals are. I used to love Chilli's, it was one of my absolutely favorite places to eat. We almost never go there anymore because almost everything on the menu is more than I should be eating in a whole day.

The more I get back into cooking and having lean protein and lots of veggies, the more most foods in a restaurant like Uno's make me go, "Ick." I can definitely get in craving modes where I love that stuff, but after calorie counting and such, I almost don't want to eat out because it's so hard to get a responsible meal!

I can SO relate!
I see ads on tv for these ginormous burgers and junk and just shudder. Since my surgery the idea of a "normal" serving size is out the window to begin with but seeing what restaurants give you is just disgusting.

Good for you for sticking with your willpower and being able to responsibly enjoy food!! :)

It's a VERY hard thing to do.

Really? I hadnt noticed? (she said, surveying her still-svelte profile and wondering why when she bends over to tie her shoelaces something large and mushy gets in the way)

Just tell me that you eventually get used to feeling hungry most of the time?

eventually you stop being hungry... but for me it took a couple of months of chewing on my boots.

I did the math for an Anna's super burrito last night. Only the tortilla and chicken. No cheese, rice or beans (the latter two being an abomination unto our Lord).

18.5 pts. I am not kidding.

Based on 8.5 oz of dark boneless chicken (I removed it from the burrito and weighed it)

And a 12 inch white flour tortilla.

Damn.

good for you!

i also always try to take half of my restaurant order home with me. it's a shocker when you finaly realize how many calories you can eat without even realizing it! especially when most places serve you "a meal" that is more than enough two or three people.

i've made it such a habit by now that i look forward to going out, because i know i've got leftovers coming to me the next day. i also always make sure to order stuff that will reheat well. *g*

however, i must say your IKEA willpower is nothing short of amazing. 1/2 of one of those things is "only" 200 calories i think.
