The crossing guard also told Brian she thought she saw babies up there, yikes! She even called animal control for some advice before waking Brian (the don't do anything about raccoons which doesn't surprise me, given that they won't even help out cats since by law they don't need to).

I left comment in Brian's LJ, but the Havahart website has good info. There are tons more out there, I know you know how to google.

Just FYI: trapping companies tell people they are "relocating" the racoons to a wild place, but it's b.s., they kill them. They'll swear up and down they don't. It's b.s. They're not allowed to relocate them. And they're actually not supposed to kill them either. It's very weird. (What they're supposed to do with them no one can tell me directly. Also weird.)

Try calling them about squirrels. They won't do anything for you, but they will tell you that if you kill the squirrels or harm them in any way, or trap them and relocate them, they will have you arrested.

babies! racoon babies are so cute and curious! so the racoon is unlikely to be rabid; she's just trying to find a safe spot for her kids. we had one come in through the catflap in somerville. It was like, "food! water! neat! ohwaitholyshittherearepeople!" and it hightailed it out again. unless they become a nuisance or are exhibiting signs of rabies, I just leave them alone.
