Our first meatloaf with CSA ground beef, accompanied by farmer's market veggies and some bulk-bought rice cooked with penzeys vegetable stock for seasoning (with a glass of local raw milk).

Hanging out with my brother and his GF, mocking the presidential debate while he works on his Biker Scout helmet. He suited up to walk the five blocks to our house in costume so that Brian could take some new roster pictures for him (and so that he could raid our basement for foam and glue sticks). I guess the reactions from folks on the street ranged from excited kids (running out onto their porch with their own toy lightsabers) to people totally doing the "I don't see you weirdo" thing, looking down, and scurrying by. It looks like our neighborhood will have yet another 'Star Wars Guy' in costume on the front porch for the trick or treaters. Maybe we should create a Watch City Trick or Treat map, and send kids to each other's houses? :)

Having a good hair day thanks to Rockin' Ringlets from http://www.jessicurl.com/ (and the drop in humidity that comes with a New Englad Fall).

Lacuna Coil is on random on the iPod, which is much cooler than watching the synchronized movement in matching outfits crap that they've pulled off with their last two tours. I have my memories, sniff sniff.

This week's horoscopes from http://freewillastrology.com/horoscopes/ . I don't live my life by these things, but its neat to see my efforts validated in completely random ways sometimes:
"Sometimes it makes sense for you to be conservative and cautious and skeptical of novelty. A periodic immersion in the slow-motion approach helps you maintain a strong center of gravity and allows you to be true to yourself in the face of the pressure you get to be like everyone else. The past few weeks have been such a time for you, Cancerian. Soon, though, you'll begin to feel urges to take some risks, instigate fresh trends, and express yourself with more daring and expansiveness. Are you game?"

Preach it, sister!

Hmm...ok...completely shallow question. For this Jessicurl stuff, does it make the roots of the hair oilier (reading the ingredient list). The ends of my hair love oil based products, but the roots end up NASTY by the end of the day.
(I have super thick, super long wavy, curly, frizzy hair so any product that works well is welcomed) :)

Really? I thought she was in NYC?

I love that stuff, too. Using the Rockin Ringlets and Confident Coils seemed to finally be what my hair liked.

In my experience, no. RR is mostly a smoothing agent (minus silicones) that defines your curls/waves a bit, but doesn't do much for hold...so you use a decent amount of it. I suppose if you're not using shampoo a whole lot, after a few days it might have that effect, but not after a day, no.

And my hair fit that description up till I cut it above my shoulders, FWIW.

Heh, I made a pledge to myself to hold on to this crazy long hair until I am too old for it (which is getting there, trust me) :)

That is good to hear though, so I might have to try this product...

FWIW with working out and being OCD about it..I wash my hair once a day religiously and 2x/day when I workout. Yeah, I know..terrible for it..but I am a wee bit crazy about the dirty hair...eww.

"FWIW with working out and being OCD about it..I wash my hair once a day religiously and 2x/day when I workout. Yeah, I know..terrible for it..but I am a wee bit crazy about the dirty hair...eww."

Well, first I got advice from friends of mine with awesome looking curly hair. They all suggested reading http://www.amazon.com/Curly-Girl-Lorraine-Massey/dp/0761123008, which I picked up from the library and got through pretty quickly. It was very informative and helpful (and pointed out to me a lot of reasons why my hair did what it did). They advocate never washing your hair with soap ever. Mine can definitely get oily after a bit, so I didn't want to go that route (still, I learned a lot about how curly hair works).

I used to use Aveda products (shampure shampoo, sap moss conditioner, one of their curly spray-in/leave-in conditioners) and shampooed every other day or so. After reading the ingrediants in the Aveda stuff (not so "natural", after all) and comparing to the information in http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/splash.php?URI=%2Findex.php , I decided I wanted to find another product. I'm too lazy to make my own, but a lot of the natural stuff for sale is more expensive than Aveda (that's saying something!) since you can rarely buy it in bulk.

I happened upon some products at Trader Joes that were way more natural, and I figured I'd give them a try (what the hell, I didn't toss the Aveda stuff until I gave the TJs stuff a couple of weeks). I was so much happy with it, its cheaper, and way more natural. I cut down shampooing (I do it about once a week now). They sell two different kind of hair products, one regular and one they tout as organic/natural (its the latter I'm using). I'm super happy with it. I'll cry if they discontinue it. I shampoo once a week and condition every day. I try to be more conscious about how vigorous I'm rubbing at my hair both in the shower and when drying (I try and kind of pat/squeeze dry, rather than frantically rubbing with the towel). I never, ever blowdry (I didn't before either), but rather than combing out things with a wide tooth plastic comb, I just use my fingers now. I comb through once with my fingers and then put the Jessicurl stuff in (combing through with my fingers again, only with the product in my hands/fingers).

RE the Jessicurl:
I was working on using up the Aveda leave-in spray, and figured I'd see what else was out there, having moved on from using their shampoos and conditioners. A couple of my curly-haired/awesome-haired friends swore by the CurlyGirl products, but said they were expensive. Comparing to Aveda though, they are actually way less expensive (even figuring in shipping costs).

The rockin ringlets is in a bottle and is too thick to spray. I put a dollop into my hands over the sink and kind of mix around, and run my fingers between my hair to get it all over, trying to avoid the roots (because for me, they are oily enough on their own). It took a bit to get used to it and not loose some in the sink, but its working very well. It takes care of frizzies better than anything I've ever used, isn't chemically, is very light (results also vary based on how much I mess with my hair while its drying - it takes a few hours to fully dry, also, if I don't comb through my hair and get the product in fast enough, the drying will have started and the frizzies started to commence). I just ordered my 3rd small bottle of it, though it goes a long way (they do sell in larger quantities, but the value doesn't seem that great, and I have a tiny bathroom so having a place to put bulk stuff is an issue).

I seem to remember you mentioning not wanting to mess with your hair products before, and I can definitely understand that, because once I found the Aveda stuff I didn't want to mess with 'what wasn't broken'. Things were kind of in control, but my curls weren't as curly as they had the potential to be, because the Aveda stuff was kind of weighing it down. I was putting my hair back into ponytails or buns often due to not being happy with how things looked. Not to mention, the money I'm saving now, and I'm putting less chemicals onto my head.

All of this stuff has kind of been an ongoing process and did take some work/time, but now that its done its done (and I'm happy with it). I still can have frizzy days here and there if the weather is crazy humid, but I'm not sure anything out there could control for that (save for pasting your hair down hard for the day with some kind of gel/mousse product). I tossed some old hair ties because they weren't as gentle as other styles could be. I do put my hair back sometimes, but it spends much more time just being down and curly now. :)

OK, sorry for rambling. :)

You can clean your hair without using shampoo, though. Sites like Naturally Curly (http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/teens/curly-college-scene-its-ok-to-skip-a-shampoo-or-two)* discuss cleaning by just rinsing and using conditioner, or using shampoo only every couple days. You end up needing less product after a few weeks of your hair getting used to that.

* That site also has some good product reviews--you can search by ingredient--which you might find helpful. The forums...they're iffy. You can find useful tips, but there's lots of fluff.

Which TJ's products? I've been liking their SLS-free shampoo (Nourish Spa), but hadn't noticed any styling products.

Nourish shampoo and conditioner (I've been using the Rockin' Ringlets for styling).

She's here for some convention, but lives in Northern CA. We met up for drinks with a few other curlies. She gave me samples of the oil blend for softer hair and the scalp massage oil which I can't wait to try out.

Rockin Ringlets and CCSS is my hair's favorite combination, too!

I have dry hair and I'm normal at the roots, so I can't give first person perspective. But, I can suggest using the heavier stuff at the roots and the lighter stuff towards your roots. Say if you were using Jessicurl's conditioner maybe you'd want to use Aloeba towards the top and Too Shea towards the bottom.

Also, if you want to try the SLS-free route (as I see you love washing your hair but know it makes it drier), their Gentle Lather Shampoo is pretty nice. I know my hair and scalp has really benefited from giving up the SLS.

Part of it is necessity for the hair washing -- working out and I swim, so I have to get the chlorine out of my hair.

Ahhh, chlorine always makes things a little more difficult. :)

You totally need to do a map of other Troopers for the Trick or Treaters! That would make it so fun and memorable for them!
