What are your most favorite places there that we should definitely check out? We crammed in the 'top tourist' attractions the last time we went, over a weekend. I'm happy that we'll have more time to explore this time around.

Weekend

We had a great (and busy) weekend. Sucker Punch was great and I am in love with the soundtrack (Pixies, Morrisey, Queen, Bjork, Eurythmics).

Saturday's ballet class was at the theater that we'll be having our show http://www.turtlelane.org/, which was neat. I learned that they are doing Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and so Brian bought us some tix for 4/9 while I was showering after class.

We drove up to http://www.outdoors.org/lodging/cardigan/index.cfm to meet up with the family. Unfortunately my father wasn't feeling well so it it was Mom and JD, Gene and Stine and Brian and I (my Sister and the littles stayed home). We chilled in the lodge on Saturday since it was late in the day, and did a small snowshoe hike on Sunday. If Brian gets more into this kind of thing I'd love to invest in our own shoes, but the rental process from REI was easy and inexpensive. We ran a ton of errands in the afternoon and get settled in at home for the night.

Pics from Cardigan are here and here http://www.flickr.com/photos/dancerjodi/sets/72157626379172878/with/5565835810/ and here http://www.flickr.com/photos/tk7602/sets/72157626241794203/with/5565894646/

I have to figure out what I'm bringing to Wonderdon/San Francisco. I bought a kindle Frommer's Guide for the area last night (nerd).

Random

I'm going back to the gym today (been a couple of weeks) - Glee on Random will be my soundtrack, since it always gets me grooving. Don't be a hater!

It's been a crock pot cooking week - the best tool for the lazy cook who wants real food! We washed a chicken, rubbed with spice and yesterday cooked in the crock while at work (we'll eat tonight with some rice and veggies). Tonight we'll brown some stew beef and throw into the crock with other stuff to cook tomorrow during the day, and we'll have stew tomorrow (a good way to use up some frozen kale methinks). And then we have some huge hunk of pork something to cook in BBQ sauce to have when - Friday? Unless we get lazy in which case we'll keep it cooked in the fridge to heat up on Sunday night. We've wanted to check out the new Zaftig's in Natick in the old Joan and Ed's space (and want to try to catch a movie), so we may do that instead.

The guys are coming over tomorrow to play with the new Lego Star Wars (rather than with their 'little men' Star Wars minis), and I'm hoping to get some sewing time in upstairs away from the ruckus.

We're going to http://www.outdoors.org/lodging/cardigan/ with the fam on Saturday, whoot!

I can't believe that Wondercon is next week, nutso!

NYC

We had a fun, short trip to the city this week. Coming home on Saturday rather than Sunday has been great, allowing us to settle into normal life slowly.

We took the Acela out from South Station on Thursday (11:15). After weighing our options, we decided to park at Alewife and leave the car there for a couple of days and take the red line straight to the train. Apparently you can no longer park overnight at Riverside, and the appeal of being right at the red line was nice. The train was roomy and fast and we are so glad we finally gave it a try. We checked into the hotel (our room was great - a gorgeous view of the river!), the best one yet that we've had the New Yorker. We had a late lunch downstairs at the Tic Toc, and then started wandering. One of the things we love about going to NYC is it's walkability. We checked out some fabric stores in the Fabric District where we were staying, made our way to the http://www.grandcentralterminal.com/index.cfm to pick up some food for a light picnic dinner, caught the exhibits at the http://fitnyc.edu/3662.asp (those crazy Japanese!) and continued to wander, wander. Our initial plan was to lay low on Thursday night and catch Black Swan across the street from our hotel. We went on a walk to find some dessert to no avail (the place we wanted to hit was closed), so after cake at the Tic Toc we returned to our room having missed the last showing at the Theater. Who knew that you could pay to watch some in-theater movies in your hotel room?! It cost less than we would have paid for 2 tickets, and we were able to watch The Black Swan from the comfort of our hotel room bed. I really enjoyed it, but could have done without the squicky saw-like picking at hangnails and such. I'm glad that we were finally able to see it.

After Saturday's breakfast at the Tic Toc (convenient, good food) we walked around Chelsea, hitting some thrift stores and lingerie stores that I had found suggested online. We stumbled upon the http://www.shoplimelightmarketplace.com/index.html and had a fun time wandering through, picking up some small whoopie pies from Wannahaveacookie (so good!). I bought a cute scarf at a shop upstairs that had small skulls and silver thread woven throughout, so subtle you'd have to really look to notice them ($15). It wasn't until later that afternoon that I realized that this site used to be the Goth Club http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/17/realestate/commercial/17limelight.html that we had come extremely close to attending a few times. Weird! We stopped to warm up and eat our cookies later at a Starbucks we stumbled on (our deal at the New Yorker included some free food at the Tic Toc and $15 worth of Starbucks credit). Our thrifting and lingerie window shopping continued as we made our way over to the East Village, SOHO and Greenwich Villiage. I came close to buying a gorgeous peacock green slip from http://www.journelle.com/?gclid=CMqWuNa5hacCFUbf4Aodx2C4cw, but neither location had it in my size. In the end, I caved at http://www.agentprovocateur.com/ - they are turning into my stereotypical travel memento. For lunch we were going back and forth with hot dogs http://www.crifdogs.com/ , mac and cheese http://www.smacnyc.com/home.html and pizza. The birthday boy was more in a pizza mood, so we went back to http://www.johnsbrickovenpizza.com/ who we loved on one of our previous trips. We strolled back to our hotel and rested a bit before heading to see Spiderman http://spidermanonbroadway.marvel.com/ . We found dinner first at http://www.bensdeli.net/ (wandering from the hotel to the theater, there isn't much that isn't a cheesy chain in this district). I loved the pickles and cole slaw and it made me miss Joan and Ed's Deli in Natick. Brian's latke was awesome. The corned beef w/ Russian sandwich that I got was dry and uneventful. I was in the mood for a Ruben but it was not to be in this very kosher restaurant. You can't win them all.

So, Spiderman. I really wanted to love this show. The aerials were amazing. The sets were amazing. The story was so odd, and I don't know what they were thinking. The songs were all over the place and forgettable. I loved Mary Jane and Peter's voices and how they worked together, and Arachne (yes, of the mythological type) was a proper Diva. I loved two of the dance numbers (one w/ the military and one with Arachne's high-heeled lady spiders), but I did not love this show. I'm glad we went, but I don't think I'd go again. Brian and I left the show feeling odd, and talked through the night trying to figure out what they were thinking or how they could have made it different.

We got up on Saturday morning and had a continental breakfast (free) at the hotel, and packed up to get to http://www.dylanscandybar.com/?gclid=CNGktry8hacCFUlN4AodpEXrfw where the http://www.empirecitygarrison.com/ was trooping to promote the Star Wars M&Ms. It was weird to be at a troop with no armor, but nice to see some friends (and Brian picked up a cute M&M Boba 'bank' at the store to add to his collection). We spent about a half-hour there before we had to head back to the hotel, get our luggage and walk over to Penn Station for our train. We picked up lunch in the station at http://www.zaro.com/ and grabbed a couple of black and whites, which are apparently the thing to buy there (so good) and headed home. The Acela once again was a magical experience, and we think the way we will travel to NYC from now on if able. I'm more than 3/4 of the way through reading the Happiness book and am loving it! It's extremely inspirational and I'm excited to think about doing a similar thing in my own life.

We got home and were craving Mexican food (there weren't good options in NYC that we were able to find) so we grabbed dinner, came home and lounged with the cats. Poor Mal was fine when we got home but at some point he hurt himself or got something in his eye - one eye is half closed but it's not red, not oozy and he's not babying it. We're going to keep an eye on it and see how he looks, and hopefully can avoid a vet visit.

Trips

Brian has been planning some trips for us. It is nice not having to be the organizer for this kind of thing, weird!

We're going to NYC for a weekend in February again to catch the Spiderman musical http://spidermanonbroadway.marvel.com/ (show is 2/11 i.e. his birthday, we're there 2/10-2/13). Staying at the New Yorker again, our usual place. The jury is out on how we are getting there. I don't mind driving and the last few long bus rides have made me want to get myself there, despite the expensive parking.

We're doing an overnight hiking/outdoor winter activity thing in March in NH http://www.outdoors.org/lodging/cardigan/index.cfm with the family.

The following weekend we'll be in San Francisco for Wondercon http://www.comic-con.org/wc/ and a couple more days of sightseeing (finally checking out the Endor forest http://www.redwoodhikes.com/Grizzly/Cheatham.html http://www.japaneseteagardensf.com/, taking time to look at the Japanese Tea Garden at Golden Gate Park). We will have to get back to the http://www.thestinkingrose.com/ too.

Crazy! Happy Brian Birthday/Valentine's Day/Anniversary to us! This is why we didn't spend too much on each other for Christmas this year.

Anything new in NYC or San Fran that we should make sure we check out?

We are back from Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando, and our following vacation/park tour. I think the easiest thing to do is post things in list form. Links to pics later once they are all up.

CV was just amazing! It was our first celebration and never before had I felt such a sense of nerd camaraderie. I was sad and close to teary at the last panel - don't say it's over! My ISO hair was the best yet, and Adrianne Curry said I looked hot, so that was also cool. The 501st and Rebel Legion involvement of the convention was epic, and I was very proud to be a member of both groups.

We checked out of the Red Roof on Sunday and headed to Disney Port Orleans Riverside, taking the riverboat to Downtown Disney a few times over the trip. Things of note:
-Sea World, the behind the scenes tour was amazing: petting a penguin and a shark and learning about how the park and their animal rescue efforts work.
-Harry Potter section of Universal was gorgeous but still crowded. An average of an hour wait for stores, 1/2 hour wait to buy a cup of butter beer, 1/2 hour wait to get into the restaurant for lunch. Still, glad we checked it out.
-2nd day at Universal main park, the $40 cut in front of the lines pass is totally worth it. Cheezy Jaws and Terminator 2 and ET rides.
-Epcot next day, took our time and saw all of the silly movies/rides we wanted. Soarin is still awe inspiring. Ate at Marakesh which was eh (though the appetizer was really good).
-Magic Kingdom last day, took our time seeing things we missed the first time. Most favorite were the cheezy 'ride a car through animatronic scenes' rides. I really liked the 'Carousel of Progress', first shown at the NY Worlds Fair in 64. Lunch at the Italian place based on Lady and the Tramp.

I'm glad we did this trip despite the weather. Oh the weather, horrible, horrible - around 100 degrees and extreme humidity. I won't go to Florida in August again unless there is a really good reason for it.

We got home at 10 PM Friday and the lovely Tiamatlady came to pick us up. Trooping the next morning at Liquid Planet in Candia, NH was a lot of fun. Links of photos to share later.

It was gorgeous, a long drive and wish I had another day there, at least. It definitely reminded us how much we miss camping, and we're hoping to get a couple more trips in somewhere, at some point.

Brian took a lot more, but these are the pics I got http://www.flickr.com/photos/dancerjodi/sets/72157624371803362/.

Weekend

We had a nice anniversary weekend with a good mix of things.

On Friday we finished up my Commander Cody http://www.flickr.com/photos/tk7602/4506422343/ and brought some things out to Bob for Boston Comicon. We wouldn't be there until Sunday and had a good deal of the garrison stuff for the table.

Saturday was our anniversary, and we took the day to wander and spend time together. After a yummy brunch at the Woburn http://www.masarestaurant.com/ , we headed north to Ipswich. We haven't been to http://www.wolfhollowipswich.org/ for quite a while and our first (and only) trip was in the dead of summer, where the wolves weren't feeling very chatty. The weather on Saturday was perfect, with sun but cool and windy air. The presentation is quite serious about how man has caused such damage to this poor animal, but it is quite inspiring and just awesome to see such amazing and large creatures up close http://www.flickr.com/photos/tk7602/4513029682/ .

From there we headed to poke around both locations of the http://www.whiteelephantshop.com/ , where I found a very neat plate for $3.15 that if it isn't Charles Rennie MacIntosh, is so inspired http://www.flickr.com/photos/tk7602/4512391663/. We still had some daylight hours left, and so we headed to explore Crane Beach http://www.thetrustees.org/places-to-visit/northeast-ma/crane-beach-on-the-crane.html for a while. Why I have not been to this beautiful place before I cannot tell you http://www.flickr.com/photos/tk7602/4513033618/ , because it is such peace and diversity in surroundings (water, sand, trees grass). We spent some time wandering around and snacked on bread, cheese and fruit in the car to get out of the biting wind.

It's been a long time since Brian and I have gone to http://putnampantry.com/, so we headed to Danvers next to partake in the smorgasbord http://www.flickr.com/photos/tk7602/4512391259/. To give some time to digest a bit from our beach picnic we drove there via Beverly, where we walked a bit more and I was finally able to check out Neith's parents store http://www.facebook.com/pages/Casa-de-Moda-Gifts-Etc-of-Beverly/107416926806 . After ice cream, though it was still pretty early, so we decided to finally catch Tim Burton's Alice and Wonderland. Though it wasn't life changing, I enjoyed the prettiness of the movie and was glad to see it on the big screen.

Yesterday was Commander Jodi's debut at http://www.bostoncomiccon.com/ at the Westin Waterfront. Though we had a small showing I think we did very well; we talked with a lot of folks, brought a lot of smiles to people's faces and raised $160 for the Make a Wish Foundation. This convention has been around for quite a while but this was their first year in a larger venue with higher-profile guests. I'm excited to see where it goes from here, because it seemed successful (they were turning people away from the door on Saturday, filled to legal capacity).

What a weekend! It makes it a bit easier to return to the normal grind on Monday morning having done so much. :)

Massive fire in Hampton:
http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2010/02/post_44.html

This block held the gift shop that was my favorite since I was a kid, you know, the one on the corner with the room in the back that housed the hermit crabs?

Brian and I spent a night at the Surf Hotel once. We had a beach-facing room with a little balcony, and planned to stay there again. It was the one time that I've stayed on the beach as an adult.

They never rebuilt after the fire that took the Old Salt Restaurant and that block was not nearly as large (the Old Salt sign still remains on the lightpost on that corner, an empty lot that's used for parking). I wonder what will happen to this more prominent stretch of the boardwalk. Things are declining as time goes on and each year the beach gets more and more depressing. I still love to go, but each year I get a bit more worried about the future of the area. I don't want it to end up 99% condo like Salisbury beach did.

So sad. Sad to the degree of the Old Man falling off the mountain sad.

We had a great time! The weather was perfect and pace good.

On Friday I read "Gift From the Sea" and enjoyed the bus' free wifi on the way down. We checked in to the hotel and had lunch at the Tic Tock before walking downtown many blocks to explore the East and Greenwich villiages (pizza at Two Boots, gelato at Grom, tea at a way overlly-conscious cafe) before the Organ Beats show. The venue was very cool, and the show though kind of empty was awesome. We talked Star Wars with some complete strangers who were admiring the Boba pin on Brian's jacket, and tried our best to recruit the Organ Beats to the 501st.

Sleeping in on Saturday was nice (we never fo this on vacation), we had brunch at Alice's Tea Shop on 64th and Lexington (an Alice and Wonderland themed place). So good, and worth the wait. We headed to the MOMA via Fao Swartz - I wanted to see the big Muppet Workshop. The Tim Burton exibit was neat (lots of screen used costume and prop bits, on addition to models and sketches). The layout (or lack thereof) was very annoying, and made me appreciate what they have done at the MOS in Boston. We walked the galleries a bit - I was happy to see some Charles Rennie MacIntosh and other art nouveau goodies, which was unexpected. We strolled from there to Times Sqare and the theater district. Toys r Us had the large Rex statue that was created from the LFL 3D models, so we paused to take a ton of photos. Dinner was st this awesomely old and divey diner on 8th near the theater, ironically enough The Olympic Diner. We killed some time with dinner and dessert, including the world's tallest lemon merenge. Oh my god ROCK OF AGES was so good! Funny and hot and great music and merch (which they even called "merch"). Each person got a lighter looking LED squeeze light for the show, and there was much singing, laugh-crying and lightering. I would love to see it again. The performers were extremely talented and were all in on the 80s hairband joke. Folks in the audience even came dressed up!

Today has been pretty calm, late breakfast (after running into a friend from Boston unexpectedly) and more wandering before getting our suitcase, grabbing hot dogs at Gray's Papaya and heading for Port Authority for the bus.

It was a great time and great length of time -sleeping in my own bed and seeing our kitties will be nice, and then back to work tomorrow,

Brian and I booked a trip to NYC next month. We want to catch the Tim Burton exhibit at the MOMA, and it is super cheap to stay in the city at this time of year. We booked the New Yorker, one of the grand old original New York City Art Deco motels only a few blocks from Penn Station, for only $110 a night. We found it from our NYC Comicon experiences, being the official hotel for that con.

Brian's birthday is about a week before we are going, so it will be a nice celebratory weekend, just because. Do any NY/NJ friends want to try and meet up? We'll be there 2/19-2/21.

We're planning a trip to CV in Orlando in August and NYC Comicon in October is on the wish list. It will be a novel concept, traveling to the city without a huge armor bin!

We were in the White Mountains of NH this past weekend for http://www.nhscot.org/. The weather was perfect and the company was fun. We only had passes for the games on Saturday, which I think was a perfect amount of time. We were able to see the athletics, pipers, dancers and musicians, eat the food, peruse the wares and generally just have fun with the folks in plaid. The best analogy we could come up with was ala Dragoncon - early in the experience you are excited to see kilts everywhere, then it's kind of the norm by the end of the weekend and it is strange not seeing folks in their costume.

These guys http://www.redhotchillipipers.co.uk/ were a lot of fun. I'm glad we were able to catch them during the day, because we didn't want to spend the extra cash for their evening concert.

We got in our usual Conway/North Conway walking and shopping on Friday (the worst of the days weatherwise) and did a bit of minor hiking and country exploring on Sunday before heading home. I am so glad that we decided to forgo camping. It was fun staying at http://www.beaconresort.com/ again, and we truly enjoyed their large indoor hot tub and pool.
