Bats!

We have a WHOLE BUTTLOAD of bats near our house! They must live somewhere nearby because at dusk there were tons of them swooping around in the sky above our yard. I've never heard the little bat squeak before :)

As time went on their numbers dwindled as they moved out to feed. I really want to get our bat house up soon so that we can see if we can procure some of our own.

WHEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

just don't do as [livejournal.com profile] mbayard did and put the bat house above the back door...could make for a messy entrance way. luckily for him, no bats moved in. ;)

How exciting and cool. You'll have a nice bug free yard. :)

that's spiffy!
we have bats in our house too. sometimes they get into the apartment. One landed on a suncatcher and went to sleep. Soooo cute. (It's not hard to make them leave - shut all the doors to the room, turn off the lights, open a window, and wait. Putting water out for it is also nice. )

I think that Bat Conservation International (they have a website but I can't remember offhand what it is) has lots of suggestions for encouraging bats around where you live.

their website is www.batcon.org (we've been members for about 5 years now) :)

We've had the bathouse in a box for years, waiting for the opportunity to put it up. We were hoping there would be bats nearby to eventually take up residence in the thing (need to figure out where to put it) . . . I guess so!

Yeah,

We were thinking really high up, near the top peak of the house . . . I THINK our attic is tight so I don't see them getting up there (and its only a crawlspace that we're most likely not going to use for anything - so I guess if they did it wouldn't be a HUGE deal) :)

Now I just need to figure out what side to put it and how to paint it; all those instructions came with the bat house (which we won in the 15 Lillies auction a few years ago).

Odd

Its just very weird - we are right near the center and in a pretty busy area but because of the trees/vegetation on and near our house we see lots of birds and critters. The bat thing just floored me. I knew we had a good chance of having some nearby since there are a few ponds and beaches around but I didn't expect so many (!)

So many people said that we were moving to a place that was too 'dirty' and 'citylike' - but I pass about 10-15 farms on my way to work through Sherburn, Natick, Wayland and Weston. You don't see many horses or cows (or bats) in Waltham :)

I need to get a bird-watching book (and trim that damned Rhodedendron so I can see out the window to the tree to the birds more easily).

omigod I am SO jealous. I put a bathouse up. . . no bats. :-< And there's a pond 10 blocks from me: maybe that's too far? I adore them. They are so cool fanning out from under 93 in downtown Boston at dusk. I worry what will happen when it all goes underground and they take down those nets under the highway near Fanueil.

I'll check out that website, thanks.

I bet you already know that the worst thing to do when a bat is trapped in the house is what people usually do: run around waving their arms to fend them off. Bats see by echolocation, and must fly in a circle a few times first. So they're not chasing you, they're trying to get a grip on where they are to find a way AWAY from you. All that flailing about just confuses and panics them. Open a window, sit down, shut up, be quiet. . . they figure it out.

LOL

Only you guys could get MORE goth points by becoming middle class homeowners...

Okay, I admit it, I'm insanely jealous.
